I like a 7-8' rod that will throw 3/4-1 1/2 ounces. I have a 8' rod from american rodsmith that throws 1-2 ounces and a tsunami 7' that throws 3/4-1 1/2 ounces. The 7' is nice on the pier if its crowded because it is easier to handle but if i need a little more distance i will go with the 8'. JMO...

Thanks hokie. I had a 7' shimano spinning rated to 1oz but the tip broke off thought about replacing the tip but I don't think it would have the same action. Anyone else have any suggestions?

ian, those cheaper shimano rods are about what you need. just for the fact that they do get beat up. Your pier plug rod gets banged on the pier, dropped, thrown, slammed etc, it aint worth it you know what I mean? And in the distance aspect, throwin the gotcha aint gonna be but so far, and additionally, anything more than 7ft becomes a pain the :spam: to throw and work all day.

I am using a 30$ Berkley Bionix spinning rod as a plugging rod on the pier. I fish a concrete pier so I know it will take a beating. It is the best plugging rod I have ever used. Action is great. I have attempted to use some of the expensive rods, and I haven't been as happy. I keep going back to this one.

I have modified it. I cut the butt down a little to clear the rail when I am plugging. Hitting a concrete rail is a little different then hitting a wooden rail. It is just more comfortable for me. It started life off as a 7' Medium action IM7. That is all I can read on it now, everything else has been worn off. That has to be a testament in and of itself. I have fished this rod pretty hard over the last 4 or 5 years. When it is not being scraped and banged against the concrete, I use it for floating worms for largemouth. Great rod, great price, and reliable performance. What more could I ask? LOL

Yea you really dont want an expensive rod for pluggin because of the beating it will take. My tsunami 7' that i mostly use i got for $20 online 4-5 years ago and it has done great for me. It has deff taken a beating but i dont worry about it b/c i have so little in it. I have it matched with a penn 4400ss and it is a pluggin machine. Ive caught hundreds of fish on it and its still running strong. Go with quality but remember what the rod will be going through as it is beat against the pier and smacks into other objects while being used...

7 ft. spinning, graphite, lightweight and you can get one without breaking the bank.
