Im kinda new to the whole shock leader thing, but have been using it for a few months now using the albright to join. I have been practicing tying the spider hitch and the no name lately, its pretty easy and seems strong and i want to try it on one of my rods. Just curious, if you are going to use a knot like the spider hitch, should it go on the running line from the reel, or on the shock leader itself with the no name tied with the running line. Just so you know i have 17lb suffix and a 50lb big game shock leader. Thanks

The doubling knot (the Spider Hitch) goes in your running line. Then the no-name is tied with the 50lb shock using the loop in the running line created by the spider hitch.

The idea is that if you tied the running line directly to the shock leader, the strength of the running line would be reduced by the knot in the leader/line connection. Sooooo, you double the running line with a doubling knot (the spider) that is close to a 100% knot, meaning that it doesn't weaken the line very much. Then you use the doubled line to attach your leader (the no-name) and since the line is doubled at the leader/line knot, the connection is much stronger. Bottom line is that the breaking point of the "system", running line to shock leader to terminal tackle, is increased by doubling the running line first and then attaching the shocker.

is the Albright not working out for you?... if it is, my thoughts on the matter are why fix what ain't broke... the Albright is simple, strong, and fairly small in size... AND it's only one knot to worry about... not multiple knots to fail on you...

Spider hitch goes on the main line side.

I thought this might help if you haven't seen it. Helped me ALOT. Hard to see the video, but I was able to figure out the still pics and have been able to tie the fast version repeatedly in about 15 seconds. (Thanks Clay).

Trick I have learned from a great teacher Mr. Rick Wynn, a drop of super glue on your knots goes along way with anti-slipping and holding the knot in place.

Hi, I recieved a very good response to a similar question on shock leaders and knots, I'll attach the link below, hope it helps. I'm using the albright, it appears to be holding up well.
