I'm looking at potentially purchasing a Penn 550 SSM reel. The Penn website does not currently list a 550 in the all metal frame reel. Is this an older, discontinued version?

I have a 650 SSM that weighs 24 oz. The 550 I'm looking at says it weighs 15 oz. with almost the same line capacity. Is this a misprint or am I just confused again?

Thanks for any help.

You may be thinking of a 5500 series not the 550????

you are most likely looking at the 550 ssg which is made from graphite not metal like the ssm models.

The 440SS, 450SS and 550SS models were discontinued in 1991 and replaced by a new Spinfisher series featuring models 4400SS, 4500SS and 5500SS. The 550SS is all metal and has a line capacity of 300 yds of 12 lb test mono. Penn lists the weight at 18 oz. for this reel. Unlike the 650 SSM, the 550SS does not have an infinite anti-reverse. The 650 SSM was first manufactured by Penn in 2005 and is still being made, albeit in China. The capacity of the 650 SSM, according to Penn, is 250 yds of 15 lb. Mono, and the weight is a heftier 24 oz. If you have a 550, it is all metal. Otherwise, it would be designated as a 550SSG for "Graphite" frame. They did make a 650SS that weighed 22 oz. that was discontinued in 1996 with the same line capacity as the 650SSM. The newer reels have a heavier stainless steel main shaft. Yours doesn't, so I would not use braid on it, since the potential for increased drag pressure could result in the shaft bending. Hope this helps.

Also just to add to what sprtsracer said the Penn 5500ss was also made of graphite.

SO..

550ssg = graphite (available now)

5500ss = graphite ( approx 1991-2003 )

550 ss (avail pre 1991)= metal
