I've heard the Daiwa 400h or even the 450h is castable, more so than the penns. 450 is comparable to a 4/0 wide in line cap. You can find them on ebay for less than 80 bucks. Or, if you want a better casting reel, I personally would consider a sl-x50sha. A little less line cap., but if you go for a braid backing and about 150 yds of 50 lb mono for a top shot, you should be able to whip anything that you can reach with a cast. Also with the size bait that can be cast (a # or less) you're probably looking at sharks mainly under 6 ft. A little more $$ but compared to a 12/0 it's a deal. All the sealines are great reels so it would be up to you what size you can cast farther. It's a tough balance of distance, drag and line cap. with sharking especially with a casting rig, cuz the farther out you can get it the better chance you have of hooking up to a big shark.
For the rod go for an OM 12 ft heavy casting model. Good value and can handle the heavy payloads and large fish. I use one for my casting rig with a 30sha and love it. It will really put some hurting on a big shark.
Hard to beat the thrill of a battling a shark on a surf set up. Hope this helps.

I've got a OM CPS also paired with 30shv. Thought line capacity might not be enough.

Fin-Nor Off Shore 95. Largest capacity and heaviest drag of any spinning reel on the market. Not that bad on price either.

Cheap??? I'd go on Ebay and get a used Penn 113H or 113HLW with an alluminum spool. Then mag the danged thing yourself. I bought a new 113HN (Baja Special) new in the box for about $150 shipped, magged it, and loaded it with 80 lb braid. Less than $75? You should be able to get one of the 113's as mentioned above.

Those 113's are a PITA to cast!
I would look into the Avet reels and fill them with braid and a topshot of mono.

Not if they are magged with an alluminum spool. You'd be surprised!

Ya I wouldn't go cheap, you pay for what you get and from the shore and if you go cheap you won't get much.
I would buy a Fin-Nor OS9500 and spool it with 65lb PowerPro.
Buy a 13ft breakaway HDX spinning surf rod for this reel. You will be able to cast it a mile.
I use this set-up have caught a lot of sharks on it and haven't had a problem with it yet.

Agreed...just remember we actually have two questions on here...one kind of a "hijack", but we won't blame him for it:D

I have one, and its a pain to cast for me. (of course I have small hands).
I use it now for yakked out baits on a 5ft sand up rod.

I use a LDX for my bait rod, its not heavy enough to handle sharks well. The Emcast doesn't hold enough line, you'll get spooled on it.
I have a saltist 40H on a Penn slammer rod (thanks Greg) with a 100 yard top shot 30lb mono momoi with 300 yards or so of 80lb dacron braid. When im on the beach I take the saltist off my slammer and put it on my oceanmaster 12 footer. Casts very well and matches my caster saltist 30 for the drum.

...looks just like this. http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l219/wbstarling/OBX%20Dec%202006/IMGP0197.jpg
That shot was of my casting rig at the OBX a couple of years ago. That reel is statically magged and loaded with more than 600 yards of 30 mono. It will cast super well. If you are using a 12 foot rod you won't be able to use much more than 30 lb test up to its abilities. The fish has all the leverage advantage over you. You got a 4 foot lever to the grip and he has a 12 foot lever to the tip. 30 pounds on the tip has to be counteracted by 90 at the grip!
Here's the same rod with a SHV30 bowed up with a nice BT at Carolina Beach NC
