View Full Version : how to buy the correct size coasters?
i need to order a new pair.
kinda confused on the size i need.
lets say for example.
if the rods diameter is 25mm.
does the coaster need to be 25mm or larger like a 28 ? to fit the reels foot?
kinda puzzling..

ooeric, buy for the rod diameter. They are made to hold a reel on the diameter rod they are sold at. 25mm coaster= 25mm rod butt + reelfoot
ooh. so if like rod diameter is like 26 27mm
i should get like a 28mm?
i notice alot of coasters only go up by 2's
or maybe i need to search harder. lol

Some of the plastic breakaway coasters will fit any rod, but if your looking to get the metal ones they do need to be sized right.
Your rod measurement needs to consider any heat shrink or cork tape that you plan to install to protect the blank, if not already on the rod.
Once you get into the larger sizes I believe they go up by 3 , ie 30mm, 33mm.
Of course they do expand a bit, you want it large enough to slide up or down the rod without too much trouble, but not so large they won't clamp down enough to secure the reel.
If you find your self in between two sizes, order the next largest size and you should be good.

Surf Cat is right about the sizes....I get them in 27mm - 30mm and 33mm as standard I do also have stock of 25mm that are special order.
Again like Surf Cat said, if you are between sizes then some tape around the reel foot would get you sorted, but undersize and those things will just not stretch.
I am told (not sure if its 100% right) that BreakAway, Hopkins & Holloway and the others who make coasters all use the same main circle spring and add their own plastic or rubber knob fitting.
They can be quite difficult to judge what size you need..25mm blank may be bigger at the butt end due to extra wraps of carbon for strength....a 25mm blank would need a 27mm coaster and still tighten down enough to hold the reel.
Tom.
ok. so i measure the rod butt with a mic.
the very bottom is about 26-27mm for low reel
and high reel is about 23-24mm
so i guess a 30mm is best? or a 28mm would suffice?
