I bought a Penn 309 at a garage sale. The metal parts are covereed in a green moldy looking corrosion along with small pits. What is the best cleaner to clean this up without damaging the internal parts?

Take the reel apart, clean all the grease, etc, off with a toothbrush and soap. Some metal parts might require cleaning with acetone or lighter fluid. Soak the corroded metal parts in white vinegar overnight. Then, take them out and rinse under running warm water and again scrub with a toothbrush and soap. A "Brillo" pad may be necessary on some of them. Reassemble using Penn blue grease and your favorite reel oil. Don't forget to check the drags and make sure they are the HT 100's!

a little lemon juice with that tooth brush will do wonders, been doing it that way for a long long time. will not fix the puttung but wi,, eat up the corrosion right away.
