Last season I started fishing around the piers for flounder using a white lead head with a white and pink grub. I would cut a strip of squid and attach it to the hook and I did pretty well with this method. I would loose the strip of squid with every hit I got, not a big deal but a little tedious when your walking the length of the pier and have to carry squid. Do you think it was the smell of the squid that produced, or the length and motion of it that caused strikes? I thought about trying to find a longer grub or using some thing else to try to mimic the squid. What do you think? Is there a lure out there that would be close to what im looking for?

Both of your guesses are correct. I use Gulp! swimming minnows for my flounder fishing and it works great.

You could also try the Gulp strips/Fishbite strips or some Uncle Josh White trailers

Pink is a killer on flounder at the Helopen pier.

The shrimp scent probably had something to do with it. Do you have to wait to set the hook with lures/jigs like with live/dead bait?
I tie my own bucktails and have some really long pink hair so if you make your own look for some nice long pink tails and maybe it'll be what you're looking for.

3/8 oz jig heads in tandem with Gulp 4" swimming mullet in white or chartuese. Nothing else needed, PEROID.

I've used a strip of white rag as a trailer when I ran out of bait(and money)...worked just as well...

Try a white buck tail with a white 4" gulp swimming mullet or a chartreuse buck tail with a chartreuse 4" gulp swimming mullet. You may want to try twister tails Finess baits, Bassassains, 4" Storm, 4" Chesapeake Bay lures or anything like this. Use a 1/4 oz jig head depending on how hard the current is running.
Good luck

What they said. I also have had good luck on the flatties with a mudminnow hooked on a bare red jighead or on a bucktail. Fish slow on the bottom. My favorite is a m-minner on a white/green bucktail. It will get anything down there that's biting.

You can also fish a minnow on a Carolina rig with either a small thin wire live bait hook or a small kale hook like about 1/0 or smaller depending on the size of your bait.
Don’t forget about finger mullet for live bait also. Use the same rig as above.
