My stradic 5000 fi was wonderful but it does not fit my aftco reel seat its a tad short .

I mainly do bridge / pier but want to also do a little surf . I have read great things about the penn slammers , spheros , emblems etc but which is actually better? or is it till personal preference .

I'd like something not GIGANTIC but it must be larger than a 5000 series . I would like it to hold at least 225yards of 17lb . as for target fish its really what ever bites .

Price does not matter as long as its under 300 dollars. And will be used on a bunch of different rod setups .

can you weld some extensions on the base to make it fit?

For ruggedness, I would look at the Okuma V System reels. Also, if you are still going to be fishing piers and bridges, as well as surf and spiking the rod or using rod holders, take a look at the Shimano Baitrunners. If you are set on a Slammer, then Penn makes the 560L Live Liner which is a "baitrunner" reel as well.

I second that. Just got one and used it the other day...smooth as a strippers tongue ring.

If you like the Stradic series, why not just get a 8000 size?

Also, what do you mean by it doesn't fit the AFTCO reel seat? Is the foot too short? How big is that reel seat anyway?

For whatever reason the seat does not fit snug its about 5mm short so i have to stuff it with cloth etc .

I liked the stradic but I also felt as excellent of a reel that it is , it is not as rugged . I am one that after fishing I rinse off my reel with fresh water then add a couple drops of oil and go again , I felt that i needed to watch sand etc constantly from screwing it up.

Is the bait runner the only one with switchable drag?

i have had my stradics for over 2 years and only maint i do on them is fresh water rinse/wipe and once a year some oil. So unless your dragging it in saltwater or laying it down in the sand i dunno what your looking for

By "switchable drag", I am assuming you are talking about the rear "baitrunner" drag. If that's the case, then, no. Okuma makes a couple and so does Penn. Shimano, however, pioneered the "baitrunner" feature.

Penn Slammers are nice tough reels. If you want a baitrunner feature I second the recommendations for the Penn Live Liner and Shimano Baitrunner... but also have a Tica Sportera which has a similar feature.

One thing that hasn't been brought up yet is that the baitrunner feature adds weight to the reel. If you plan to throw lures a lot you might be better off without the feature.
