View Full Version : Problems with my cast

Ok, I have some problems getting the line out straight when casting my heavers, but I found out the problem which causes the line to go a little off center to the right not quite 45 degrees off, but sometimes its 20-30 degrees off dead center.

When using my spinning reels (usually Okuma CD90) my right hand, holding the line and my left is on the butt section. I noticed that the reel is facing more to the side then up (meaning my wrist hyper extends). I try to correct this as I manuver into position and load the rod, but sometimes during the cast, the rod twists or turns a little and the reel is more on its side than facing front. (Understand so far?). thus causing the line to go off at an angle instead of straight ahead.

So aside from making a conscious effort to keep the rod/reel in the right position, any suggestions. I can certainly handle the rod and the reel weight wise. Putting the muscle and Arse into aren't a problem either. Other wise my off the ground cast is pretty good. I was thinking that a wrist brace ( wore one for a while for my carpal tunnel) would help keep the hand in the correct position, but this seems like MAJOR overkill.

You salts out there or some of you distance guys have any suggestions. Thanks!

Jeff

I am an absolute novice at this, so take what I say with a grain of salt. On the "push-pull" would it be possible to twist the left hand slightly when pulling? I have the same problem occasionally (among other problems, LOL) I know this might not be "proper", however, and don't want to learn bad habits. Haven't tried it yet, but just a thought. Geesh...I need some lessons.

Sounds to me like your just releasing to soon, it's a common problem for spinners.

I seem to have the same problem. I do think it has something to do with the spinning reel position. It feels ackward to me when I'm doing the pendulum cast since the reel is a big ocean master 10000 .

try taking the arse out...technic gets the bait out...try not to put so much power into the cast...if you can throw a 3 straight on another spinner, you can throw a heaver...

jef do you hold the rod on the right or left side of your body? I used to hold my rod on my right, and use my right hand to hold the line (be close to the reel also), and use my left hand to pull the butt towards the beach to cast. I finally had to switch up. I now hold the line with my left hand and use my right hand to pull the butt down and really power through. I can bomb 5 oz's this way, and I'm practicing daily with 8's. IDK if this helps, but slowly increasing weights has helped me form a solid technique so far!

I think rattler said it all!:fishing:

OK, many will laugh at me giving any advice to anyone regarding casting straight out...but...

A few years ago, NS4D gave me a piece of advice that he later said he never said (he had had a few BLs at the time) but what he said was: Right handed? Point your big toe of your left foot in the direction you want your cast to go.

It has helped me a LOT.

Hey Rory...I will try that tomorrow since it makes sense to me.:fishing: I think there are different ways to stand to correct a cast ....don't hurt to try em all...plus.....I think there could be alot better or at least different stances to use when distance casting other than the John Holden, Ron Areea (sp) etc type:fishing:

rorrygoggin may have something...I've never looked at my feet when casting...I look at where I want the bait to go...it all takes time and practice...eventually you will even be able to cast in the wind...good luck

When I cast my spinning reel I use a pendulum type cast which is sort of straight over my shoulder it seem s to go straight most all the time.

I've done what Rory has said for throwing bait casting out fit. It seems to work.

Yeah, I will try to get a Rocket for my spinning reels. I get alot of finger burn even with tape, so it must be the timing with my finger release. I have been trying to force by pushing (right hand on reel on right side of body) then pulling with left hand on butt section. I saw a video on longcasting by the folks that make breakaway and I try to do more pulling then pushing to get the power in the arch.

Guess I will have to just go down to the ball field and get some mor practice. One thing is my 525 is casting straight, so I may just end up repalcing my spinning reels. :)
