View Full Version : Uni Knot Questions

I just have a few random questions about the uni knot.
1. If it's suitable for swivels and whatnot, I assume it's ok to use on hooks? If not then you'd just have a weak link on the swivel and that doesn't really make sense to me...
2. When doing the uni-to-uni, how close do you trim the tag ends? I had a sinker go "pop" last time I went fishing because the line trying to come off the spool caught on a tag end of the uni to uni of a shock leader. Luckily it went safely straight out where I was casting.
3. How strong is the uni? It's very easy to tie for me and it's one of the few knots I can tie in a50 lb. test. I usually snell hooks on rigs and use the palomar for hooks but I can't get either of them to tie with 50 lb. test. It's cheap and stiff, so it may just be the line. I'll look into getting a new spool, but in the mean time I'll use it...

1 yeap, good for hooks or swivels, they even have a "uni snell"...
2 cut them short as you can without damaging your line. In mono,if tied properly,a uni is not going to slip.. I have had a problem with the new "improved" Suffix Tri with a four wrap uni.. I have tied uni to uni to connect the same size lines and they have come apart in the newer suffix.. Been tieing a four wrap uni since I started saltwater fishing, with many brands of lines, never had one come undone until this.. All that said, you sould have no problem, long as you make at least 6 wraps for the newer suffix.. It was the only way it would hold for me..
3 uni knot is a very strong knot,as much as 90% in many cases.. With the 50 you are using a 4 wrap uni should be plenty strong...

Thanks for the info. I think another question I should have asked is how many turns do you make for certain uses?
Like, say, 50 lb. to a hook or swivel and 20 lb. to 50 lb. shocker.

I have used four in all those cases, but the "new improved" suffix threw a monkey wrench in it,so I just quit using it....

Thanks. I was looking at getting some of the Tritanium so thanks for saving me some trouble. I've heard it's very slick and a lot of knots will slip apart.

The sufix tri is very good for getting the knots to bunch up correctly because of the silicon coating but it also may cause the knot to slip. Once I have used the line a few times the problem disappears. To be safe add a few more wraps.

The Uni knot
1 Is perfect foe swivels both barrel and snap and works well tied to any hook that has a straight eye
2 If you trust you knot-tying abilities then cut that tag as close to the knot as you can
3 The uni knot is a 100% knot and is my go to knot for most everything I tie
