Can anyone explain how to do the haywire twist better than the package can? I'm using #61 Malin wire, and wanted to make a few rigs for toothy fish.
I can do the barrel wrap fine to finish it off, but the beginning part I have trouble getting both wires to twist instead of just one around the other. When I do it's long (maybe an inch of wrapping) and just doesn't look right...
Any tips?

Are you using a Du-Bro E-Z Twist tool?

Didn't know there was a tool, I'm just using my fingers.

Thanks for the link, I'm just tying a few up for big bluefish or smaller sharks or something. Can't hurt to have a few in the bag ready to go.

You can do it fine without the twist tool. When you are doing the first wraps keep the tag end and main line at a large angle to each other. (It should look like the letter Y with the loop at the top. When you twist, twist the loop while holding the main line and tag tightly. If you have trouble turning it stick a screwdriver, dowell rod or pencil into the loop to get more leverage. It is very important for the strengh of the connection to have them both twist around each other rather than one twisting over the other.

When I make my king rigs, I will run the wire throw the eye of the hook. Then I will bend the wire back on itself to make a "V ". Here is the "finger saver" trick..... I will pull the wires close together still forming the "V", then I will hold the wires in the jaw of a pair of Needle Nose pliers. The teeth of the needle nose will hold the wires perfectly still. I usually have a few teeth between the wires.

I have to make a few rigs up for this season. When I do, I will take some snap shots and post it. Then come out looking professional without the hassle of trying to hold the wire still or use a screwdriver in the loop. I used to try to screwdriver deal until I started with the pliers. :)

You need to use a Du-Bro E Z twist tool to do a haywire twist with 61 pound wire. The video linked in this thread is using MUCH heavier wire. 61 pound wire is very thin, flexible and springy. It is practically impossible to do an adequate haywire twist without the E Z Twist. Once you get it down you can make very strong, thin, and cut proof leaders. Here is one of my twists using 58 pound wire. With very thin wire you need to make @ 10 wraps before you do the barrel wraps. - HPD

HPD, I don't think ya NEED to use that twist tool for 61lb wire.

But it sure makes it easier, don't it?

I have always done it with my hands. they were sloppy at first and it always hurt when I did a bunch at one time. I tried using a tool last year one time and I actually make better ones with my fingers. I think it is better to know how to do it well with your hands, you know in case one day you dont have the tool. if you just practice you will get it down, just like tying knots at first.
