View Full Version : Tried to save money oooops
Was at Bass Pro last weekend because I needed new line for my trout rod. Looked at Ande but it was $9 for a 1/4# spool. Bass pro's Offshore Angler Tight Line was about $5.
Had heard people I know use it for leader in 50# and had no problems so I picked up a spool of 8#.
I spooled up my Laguna and gave it a try last night. Didn't catch anything big.
Today I went to tie on a new fluro leader and the line kept breaking. Stripped off about 50' of line before it would stop snapping in my hands with a good tug.
Went out again this evening and after about 20 or so cast when reeling in I noticed one side of the spider loop was broken. Cut it off and tried to retie it and again it kept breaking.
Pulled of another 30 or so feet before the line would stop breaking.
Didn't catch another fish after that but this stuff seems to be alergic to salt water.
Will try it again next weekend but if the same thing happens its going in the trash.
Anyone else used it and had same results or maybe I just got a bad spool.

Trash it now. You definitely don't want it to break when you have a fish on. It's not worth a chance at saving $5 to loose a fish. I don't know anything about the line, but it sounds like you either got a spool from a bad batch or the line is no good. They don't make the line one spool at a time, so if it's bad toward one end, chances are it's bad all the way through, as are the rest of the spools from that batch run. Poor quality control.

that's why be wary of cheap stuff. i always believed in the saying, "you get what you pay for".

Put a 3oz. on there, cast it as far as you can. That will be a good start, then pull the rest off. deffently get new line before going :fishing: again!!!!

Last year I was steelhead fishing in Wi. Hooked into the biggest steelhead I'd ever seen. He jumped twice and then - Snap! I had bought a spool of 8# Vanish that had been marked down at wally world. Same as with Cdog, I could break it with one good tug. I vowed that day to use quality line and buy from a place with heavy turnover so the line is "fresh". Also I change line at least twice a year. Cdog, get some new stuff.
Thanks for the replies.
For my fishing I rarely scrimp. Don't think I will do that again.
After talking to NewsJeff, I think I may go to the darkside and try braid on my trout rod.
Think I will try the Fire Line in 10 or 12# test.

8lb is plenty on a trout setup.
8lb is plenty on a trout setup.
Haven't really used braid in years.
But if 8# braid has a diameter of say 2# mono and my reel holds 200 yards of mono then it would take over 400yrds of braid. I guess I could put a 100 yrds backing of mono and fill it the rest with braid.

Sounds like you possibly got line from a bad batch. Ya never know. Ive seen it happen before. ??

Check your guides reall good, you may have a cracked guide that is shredding the line.
I have used plenty of 8 # tight line, and it has always been very good.. I'm sure BP would replace it if it is bad.

i use 8lb tight line on all my freshwater rods and my gotcha pole for blues and never had that problom must of been a bad batch
just sell your line to any distance caster.
since we waste 8-10lb test line every time we blowup or snap anyways. lol

Cdog I think that is just a bad spool of line. It is made by a very reputable manufacture.

I use the 10 lb. powerpro on most of my small rods and love it !! I got the 1500 yd. spool from Randy when he still ran the BaitShack and use enough mono as a backing so I can have about 100 yds. of braid as the top line. If I'm fishing in clear water for a species that's 'sight-sensative' I'll tie on about 24-30" of flouro. dbl. the braid with a nail and then uni to uni, works for me.

Trash it. No sense in wasting time or energy with junk.
If you are talking about freshwater trout (i.e., stocked trout) I use 4 pound Stren line. Ties well, cast like a dream with even the lightest of lures. I put 6 pound line for my kids' set up only because the 4 pound is so light that it takes a little more attention to avoid getting it hung around the pole/reel. IMO the 4 lb. Stren is sweet and performs very well.

I tend to agree. It may just be really old as well. It doesn't seem like they turn over the product very often for that type of line. I've had that happen once with the 50 lb stuff.

I try not to venture away from the lines I trust and know... Ande, Suffix, and Power Pro.
I left about 75 yards of the mono on and filled it up with 125 yards of fireline 10#.
Tossed it in a creek for awhile.
Man its going to take some getting used to braid.
I bet ya could feel a fish fart next to your lure.:D

Truer words were never spoken. I generally hate braid, but it's perfect for plugging rods. You'll get used to it after awhile and learn to appreciate it. But if you're fishing for trout, use a rod with a really fast tip and take it easy on the hookset.
Just my .02 Clay, but.... I really like using mono for light tackle fishing, especially Speck's since it offers some stretch when fighting fish with a lower line-class like 8-12lbs and they have such soft mouths..... Additionally, I don't use a leader when Speck fishing artificials, I tie direct and use 12lbs. Suffix... Seems if I go lighter, the fangs on the Trout sometimes cut through the line... However, when Puppy Drum are my quarry, I do like the braid for the sensitivity, and abrasion resistance and strength... When I use the braid I join it to flourocarbon leader in the 14-18lbs. class using a spider hitch that I modify a bit... Ofcourse, that means when I wanna target both species I have to carry at least 2 rods(usually 3).... when Yak fishing. Anyway, just thought I'd throw that out there... Any luck with the Speck's yet?? Gonna try and go in the Mobjack next week early on... Hoping the wind lays down, the water clears, and I get to slide away from boat maintenance... Then it's off to Raleigh for some music the following weekend. After that, we need to get together and scare some fish one afternoon?!? Fish On

Clay the most important tip you'll ever get when you first start using braid on spinners is to close your bail by hand every time and when you do pull the line tight away from the reel before you start reeling in so it stays tight on the spool. This will help greatly in preventing 'wind knots' AKA bird nests.

Zigh, thanks for the input. Is Wide Spread Panic playing?

Jay, thanks for the tip, Jeff had told me the same thing. I remembered to do it about 90% of the time the other day and had no problems. I'm sure it will become second nature like retrieving your line at night on a conv reel.
That's a 10-4 on the Widespread Panic in Raleigh(2 nights) and then the next night(4/27) in Richmond.... I'm getting to old for these 3 night in a row weekends;) We'll catch up s00n and hunt some Speck's... Fish On

Actually, you can feel him grunting before he actually farts. Can feel a crab blink its eyes before it tries to steal your bait also. Like flea said, just be careful on the hook-set. Slow, easy and steady.

you should try cortland masterbraid, havent had a wind knot with it in over a year
Found one serious drawback to braid. Ate a groove in my top guide in less than two fishing trips.
Guess its time to upgrade th tip guide...
