I am looking at buying a new 11 or 12 foot Shimano Spinning Surf Rod. The specs say 4 to 6 oz. weight. If I throw an 8 oz with bait will that break the rod?

If they rate it for four to six, it probably has a "sweet spot" at five. I would imagine you can cast or rather lob eight, but why take the chance. Could break the rod and may hurt yourself. Look at the Tica, it is rated 2 to ten I think and that should cover your needs... never used the schimano, but thas my two pennies...salt

Thanks for the advice. Currently I have a 10 foot Shakespear and it is too limp.

Another question on rods. I have looked at a lot of rods and they all have different placement of the reel. How do you measure yourself to make sure the reel will be in the correct position for surf casting? The only rod I found that you can adjust the reel placement is the Shimano.

I'm sure the rod builders can help better, but Arm pit to the hand was what I was taught. It may seem long but it works. Oh most factory rods will be much shorter.

If ya find a factory rod ya like with the butt too long just cut off an inch or so.

try this with a stick, maybe a broom or something

place butt end at your right armpit.
then raise stick up, reach up with right hand and grab rod, without moving butt away from armpit.

now mark where your index finger is or near there.

now from where you just marked the stick
add 1cm for each ounce your gonna throw.

ex. 6oz, add 6cm above your mark

thats your optimal butt length you should have.

another method is to measure shoulder width,
take rod in both hands. raise to shoulder level. hands at the end of shoulder. mark.
then add cm to weight.

take my arms for instance. im 6'3
i measure 26" then i add about an extra 4" . so my reels are at about 30-32"
anything shorter then 25" is uncomfortable to throw. can i can throw em.

without breaking your bank book.
the bassproshop oceanmaster CPS lite 3-6 is good.
the are about 26-27" last time i checked.

you are looking for a "spinning " rod, if I read this right...I don't trust the 2-10 crap...its a 4-8 at best...do you need to THROW 8+ often?...if not get a good rod that meets your needs...a rod rated to 6, will LOB 8...tsunami, penn, tica, ande, etc...otherwise, you will end up a tackle ho like me, and have 50 set ups that never see water...hope this helps...

distance would depend upon the length of the rod. you can't have a 30" butt on a 9' rod. i wouldn't also risk cutting the rod as this will ruin the warranty especially on shimano rods that offer lifetime warranties.

if you really want a rod that is suited and fitted according to your measurements, you need to go to the custom route and not an over the shelf rod.

there's just too many variables.
