Great board you guys have here! I only surf fish a couple times a year so I have quietly lurked for a while before registering.

I have a question about using braid. I spent a week in the Outer Banks last year and surf fished every day. I use mainly spinning gear and I have a question about what type of line you guys use. I didn't like the way the mono behaved on the rough days. I am considering refilling my reels with braid. Maybe 20# fireline? Before I drop the $$ on new line, I want to make sure I am making a good decision.

Any help would be appreciated.

I haven't been to the Banks but I would not use braid there.I believe they frown upon that. Go with Suffix mono line.

BTW, welcome to the family.

Braid....WHy do you want to use It? On the point in Hatty I would not do it. BUt if you have then money to spend, you want the bite detection and sensetivity and strength to diametere of line size, then by all means. BUt I like the sufix

Thanks for the input. I bought sufix when it first hit the shelves for one of my freshwater bass rods. I had some problems with it during the season so I replaced it. From reading the board, it looks like sufix is quite popular with avid surf guys.

The main reason I am considering braid is for sensitivity and less drag in the surf. Does sufix perform better than mono in the surf?

A rod that is long enough to be over the crashing waves will help with the drag in the surf issue, a quality rod will help with sensitivity too. I am assumming you are talking about bait fishing and not lures.

Actually because braid does not stretch it will drag more not less than mono.

As the waves hit the braid since it has no stretch it will pull your sinker free and it will slip and move down the beach.

Mono on the other hand will stretch with the waves and allow your weight and bait to stay in one place.

Depends Clay. My smaller rods I have braid on and I can generally get to hold with less weight...same weights Ive got mono to drift. I think theres a fine line between where it will hold better than mono before the lack of stretch makes it pick up and drift. I think theres a small window current:line diameter:stretch equation the Einstein might have to work out, that will make the arguement go both ways.

Could be, my comment was from fishing Ocock a few years ago and a guy was fishing next to me with braid and kept drifting over me.

Watched him cast and he was not casting over me and since we were using the same weight we figured it was the braid since I was using mono and holding.

Go with best of both worlds. Fireline gives you the strength, thin diameter and the distance casting of braid with the abrasion resistance of MONO.

What you lose compared to mono is stretch, but you should be using mono for your leaders, so that takes care of that

And it just keeps getting better the more you use it and has absolutely no memory,,,never had rats nest with Fireline:cool:

Sorry, that was supposed to be a link to a search I did on "braid" in the tiltle of threads in the open forum. Worked when I first posted it, maybe the search timed out. Anyway, I'm sure everyone can do their own search.

Man, this board is killer! My surf rods are decent graphite sticks. I have extra spools for 2 of my reels. I think I am going to try fireline on 2 and leave the mono on one. I'll keep back-up spools with mono just in case.... I always use 20-30 flouro leader on my braid rods. I love using braid for jigging on the Chesapeake. Nothing beats it.

My beach sticks are only 8' & 9'. I never got serious enough to use the telephone poles. My wife and I just like to chuck bait, sit in chairs, and pound cold ones. Last year in Carova we did great. Caught 4 solid reds, a pile of blues, a few pompano, and the usual suspects. My kids love digging up sand fleas. We caught 3 of the reds on fleas. We went in mid-august. This year we are spending a week in Rodanthe the 3rd week of June. Hopefully fishing will be good again.

Man, I tell you what. Could you just imagine if you could earn a living sittin' in a beach chair while fishing and pounding beers? Maybe that's what waiting for us on the other side....

I was up at bass pro on Sunday and picked up 1,500 yards of 40# power pro. I'm going to test it on a couple of rods and see how it goes. A buddy of mine said he would buy the remaining spool if I don't like it.

I'll be down in Rodanthe in a couple of weeks. I want to pick up another light duty 9' - 10' surf rod and reel. I wasn't to happy with the selection @ Bass Pro. Can anyone recommend a tackle shop in the Rodanthe area that has decent selection and price?

I've heard a lot good feedback about the Tsunami Airwave.

BC when you put the braid on, don't fill the spool all the way out, and after the cast give it a pull to even out any line that might be overlapped. I particularly don't care for braid except in certain instances, but the one I use is suffix., but the filling of the spool regardless of the brand you use is important... salt
