I always try to spend my money at the local bait shops if possible, but if I'm in/near a Bass Pro and see something I need and I'm not planning on going to a local shop, I'll get what I need there. Just because of the convenience.

You don't have an option for whatever is closest. Because thats me.....Unfortunately Northern VA has a serious lack of bait and tackle shops. We're limited to Dicks and Walmart (both of which suck IMHO) The only time I get to hit a specialty shop is when I'm heading out to the beach or bay.

I try and buy most of my stuff local if I can get it there. A lot of times I can't find what I want at the local B/T shops.
I will order online for bigger ticket items if the local B/T shops are priced significantly higher. As long as it somewhat close in price I will buy local. My usual threshold is 15 or 20% for most things.

I try and do my purchasing wherever I am going to be fishing. I go through my terminal tackle boxes before a trip and see what stock is low or out and what I need to restock. My way of looking at it is it’s important to have a shop local to where you are fishing and if I don’t support them they might not be there any more. For rods and reels I do try and hit the local shops to see what they have. There are times when the only place to get a specific rod is at a larger store. But, I’ll give them a chance first as they may have something similar or better!
For example, if I’m going to Beaufort Inlet I’ll stop in at Freeman’s and pick up what I lack or as near to it as I can given their inventory. If I really need a specific item they don’t have I’ll hit Boaters World on Atlantic Beach. For the annual 2-week Buxton trip, Frank & Fran’s is always the first stop. I’ll spend some cash there even if it is just to have a color of something I don’t have already. I also get fresh line on all the reels there. But, for that trip I do plan on making tackle purchases there it’s just a matter of how much I am lacking.
For the most part I try to spend my money semi locally.
The tackle shop I go to is about 45min from my house but I have been spending money there for 8+ years now.
When I wanted my first custom, he built it for me at cost.
When travelling down to the Outer Banks I will always spend money in the local tackle shops.
Usually bait, but even if it is just buying ice or a few sinkers I try to support them so they will still be there with the fresh bait on my next trip down.

I buy from OBX shops to support locals. Ban the big box stores!

I get all my custom rods built by a guy in Hatteras.
I buy (most of) my factory rods locally from Gregg.
I buy (most of) my tackle locally from Gregg.
I buy (most of) my reels on Ebay.
I sometimes pick up a used item here on P&S.
I buy all my bait locally. :p
depending on the type of gear. i buy the cheapest.
like..... online price for Item X is 100$
my local BnT price is 120$ then they add tax.
thats a pretty hefty markup from MSRP.
i really only use my local BnT when i need bait, sinkers on the fly, hooks on the fly, slidey yellow FF clips.
also, sometimes i CANT buy things at the BnT cause they just dont have them here in NYC.
im not able to find WRI, Century, ZZiplex and all the good stuff here.
everyone here is lamiglas this, gloomis that, stradics up the ass, or tsunami rods.

Raleigh is somewhat lacking in the hardcore surf gear arena. I try to buy from Ken at Carolina Outdoor when I can, but he doesn't stock any Abu stuff and his surf selection, while improving, isn't great. I buy plenty from Bass Pro when I trip to MB. And I'm looking to get a new reel from the internet if I can get the money. I also grab good deals from the Marketplace.

Same problem here. Greentop is a good place but they still are a bit lacking in surftackle understanably so I might add. I was in the business for years both as an owner and employee. Good points of view comming in though.

Like Jesse I buy tackle pretty much everywhere. I shop on line then go to where it's available and buy it. Most will even negotiate price. In case some of you other Virginians have not noticed, there is a $10.00 off any $50.00 or more purchase from Dicks on the back cover of the VDGIF Fishing Regulations. I have used that a couple times. They also had a pre turkey season sale that was buy 1 turkey call get any other 50% off. That smoked any offer in town.
