Surf? Pier? Boat?
I have a Saltist 30H. I plan on putting it on my soon-to-be-finished AFAW BB conventional heaver and using it for the first time this weekend at AI.

AFAW = Anyfish. Anywhere. It would really help to know what species you're going after, but judging from the reel, I would guess sharks, cobia, possibly big drum or striper. Unless you're going after big biters and you need a ton of line capacity, the 40H is probably overkill for the last three I mentioned. A 20H or 30H is better suited for surf casting. I would recommend the Rainshadow 1569 or 1509, AFAW Big Beach, Lami 1502, Wheels Reels Fusion, Fusion Mag, Inferno, or even the Nail if you're sharkin'. If you let us know what you're specifically going after, we can narrow that list down a lot.

You're gonna use a 40H for croaker? If you plan on store bought, go get a BPS Ocean Master 12. The Bait Shack has them, and they're a sponsor. ;) Usually have the best prices you're gonna find as well. Oh, that rod'll handle all those fish and then some too.

store rod
That's a start- now decide the weight range the rod will need to toss. As suggested the 40 is on the large size for distance casting- no rod is really going to turn that into a distance casting reel, but in general the Bass Pro OM (Ocean Mater) rods might be a good place to start- the breakaway HDX is another good choice, if you have more dough you can look at St.Croix or G Loomis, Lamiglas, etc.
THe Tsunami and TICA rods are available also, but I would consider them a little light for that big reel. There are many more choices- your actual budget may play a role in your final decision- suitable rods can start at $90 or so, and can go up in price (perhaps rapidly) from there.

would it be better to change that for a 30h as far as distance goes?

Definitely the 20 or 30 over the 40. The first two are darn near bomb proof out of the box.

Fusion Mag. Get the 30 instead of 40.

Definitely the 20 or 30 over the 40. The first two are darn near bomb proof out of the box.
Was fishing a new area and a spinner guy who was catching bluefish pretty well thought I should be able to cast further and offered to show me how to use my setup to cast further. I kept asking him if he'd ever thrown conventional before and he said yes but I should have known better when he said you don't need to throw the freespool lever because he didn't have to do that to his spinner. He did the usual spinner whip cast and didn't bother braking w/ his thumb. Biggest birdnest I've ever seen. Had to hack off must of my Suffix 20 topshot because I couldn't untangle it
Just in case you're wondering what the limit of bombproof is on a 30H
