Well I am having a huge mental debate. I currently live 2.5 hours from the beach, The AI ORV vehical permit doubled in price, and gas prices are going through the roof. I am trying to debate if it would be worth selling my "surf" gear and focusing more on fishing around here. Thinking it might be tome for a yak and stay close. Anyone have any wise words for me, anyone going through the same situation? I know everyone is hurting from gas but for me is it worth hanging on to it, or getting some extra cash and focusing local. I do fish a dam that has some stripers and the go old Susky flats.

Yeah but how often, two years ago I made it down about 15 times. Now the permit went up big time, and I don't know if it is worth getting another nad then only going 1 or twice. I am youg married guy thats about to start a family trips would be even more limited. Not trying to whine but I am really kinda crushed about all this gas and over all inflation.

I can understand that. We do what we got to do. It's not like you have to give it up forever. I admire you for thinking like this, family first. If more people thought like that we'd all be better off.

I definitely would not sell it all, but you might just want to get rid of some of the back up gear. It will be hard, a lot like loosing a loved one, or your pet dog, but P&S will help and give you support through your hard time.
P.S. I got dibs on all reels

However, saltandsand makes a good point about gear not getting any cheaper.

Don't sell your equipment as you will still need it if you only make one trip a year.I live almost 800 miles from where I do most of my saltwater fishing.Have about 20 reels and 12 rods and probably need to get rid of half of it,you night be in the same shape.

Only you can make the decision- if you have lots of gear you can as suggested, just cut out the spares, and keep the rest.
No sense in dumping everything and then regretting it later. Try the local fishing by all means, but leave your options open to "get away" ocassionally.
Is the ORV pass only availabe on a yearly basis, or can you pay for individual trips?
Gas is not likely to get any cheaper, so you may need to make less trips, you can still plan to make the most of a few trips, and you will relish them all the more due to their infrequency.

Maybe its time to take a break and ride out this storm.....As long as you have a dam and some freshwater lakes etc. near it would help the pocketbook and the family.
I have never experienced this type of price inflation on goods gas etc in the 58yrs of my time. I'm really curious to see where this is going to end.
It seems the powers to be wants a person to work, stay home, and have no fun on hobbies..Maybe when the tree huggers, bird huggers, greenpeace, etc can only watch their favorites on tv and not afford to see it live then they will have a REAL reason to bitch.
Hang in there !:fishing:

It happens to the best of us at times. It has happened to me three times. The first, it cost me a bunch of $$ when I changed my mind. The others? I just cleaned and oiled everything and put them in storage where I could see them from time to time. When it does, and it probably will, you won't have to go through the hassle and expense of reestablishing your stash. You'll only have to buy a few items and you're back in the saddle again. C2

I used to make 2 trips a year for surf fishing (and I live about 14 hours from the coast. Now my 5 kids range from 4-11 and I've cut back to one trip every two years. If that goes away as well, I can live with it. A little over 18 years from now I will retire and fish as much as I want.
I'd give it up for now, but don't sell the stuff. A couple years down the road you might find the chance to make the trip and you will be ticked if you don't have the equipment.

The only thing I do now is bring the caravan in the summer and use the 4x4 in the fall for the big stuff... been half way looking for a little easier ride on gas, but hey, if it is not there will still use what I got. If you quit they all win. Just have to hang in and cut down where you can but after being through the 70's and communting in construction for 30 years am aware of what you are going through... hang in if you own it already it does not cost you to keep it... only bad thing with us is it is a fixed income... but hey... bettern than nothing.... just my dime... salt

this is what is getting to me, I fish in MD for the most part. Unless I have the ORV permit there isn't too many places for me to fish 8 & bait except for AI. Now what I am talking about selling is my 3 Abu 6501 C3's all converted and an OMCP, Tsunami 12"XH, and Breakaway HDX. Not great equip. but maybe buy a real nice setup for the dam which I could always throw bait with. But I don't want to throw conventional gear at the dam with lures. Its tough, I just don't see when I am going to use it. I always want new stuff, so if I held on to it for 5 years or so, I am going to want new stuff. See when I first started getting serious about it gas wasn't that high, maybe $2.30 a gal. which was do able. but now what frequency am I going to get to go. I am not moving anytime soon either. I want to sell but then I don't want to. Its eating at me cause I just don't want the stuff sitting when I could have used the money for gear that I will use. The bigger problem is that the gear is just good for soaking haevy bait, If it was spinning gear it might have more purpose

Hey Justin, here's the deal, most have already said it but let me repeat the message, don't sell.
Yeah, time is going to be a premium for a while when you guys have kids but you, wife and kids are still going to want to go to the beach. That part shouldn't change. Teach the kids to fish. Heck, teach the wife to fish. :D
My kids are now of the age where they go with me when I go fishing and my daughter wants to learn to throw a conventional now...How cool is that!!! ;)

Not sure what good it would do to sell your gear unless you are really bad off with money.
The prices of gear aren't going to go down, you'll have something to give to your kids, if times do get really tough you have some things that you can then sell to help get you buy.
Best of all, if you have some quality things they might bring many times what they are worth right now later on.

Let me preface my remarks by stating that I am lucky and live right on the beach, as well as within walking distance of Sunglow Pier, where I am an Annual Passholder. That being said, there is an old saying that goes something like, "This too, shall pass. Keep in mind they are paying over $8.00 a gallon in Germany and elsewhere in Europe. I will say this, however...we will probably never see gas prices below the $3.80 mark ever again, so we may as well get used to it. It's my belief that eventually, the economy will "even out", so to speak. I am also fortunate in that I have a retirement income from the US Army that has a built in COL adjustment every year, as well as pay raises almost every year, depending on the mood of Congress. In addition, I will also be drawing Social Security on top of that in another year, so I'm pretty well set. I certainly feel for those who are on a fixed income. The fishing gear industry is VERY fickle! For example, just take a look at Ebay. People will go to wally world and pay $70 for a new Penn Jigmaster made in China...yet a mint US made Jigmaster will bring maybe, if you are lucky, $30.00 on Ebay. I don't care what reel it is, prices do not appreciate on fishing tackle except for two observed exceptions...Penn 140 squidders and Accurate/Penn conversion parts. This may be controversial, but I would recommend that you keep one or two of your favorite outfits and sell the rest. You will at least still have something to fish with when you do get to the beach. The other thing is that as time goes on, prices will go up on fishing gear, but so will wages, inflation, and more importantly...technology. Don't believe me?...look at the people opting for the new Shimano Stradic FI reels now, as opposed to the FH from before...albeit at a higher price. Penn had a 113HN Baja Special that they came out with...$250 retail! Great reel at the time. Subsequently, out came the Torque series, and then the "Metal Senator" and the 113HN was discontinued. As a result...I picked up a new 113HN for $100 less than retail. When I first moved to Florida from West Virginia 5 years ago, I was not yet retired, had no job down here, and came down merely to check out the job possibilities. Picked up a few sales jobs, sometimes working two at a time for almost 4 years until retirement kicked in, and now I'm set. I guess in summation, I would advise:
1) Sell what you think is "extra" only and keep one or two rigs for use with the local stripers that can double on the coast.
2) Start a plan to move closer to the coast (long term or short term) but make sure your family is in agreement!
(As already stated...family first!)
3) Plan on spending a little more for fishing equipment later on when the opportunity presents itself, keeping in mind you will also be paying more for gas, milk, groceries, cars/trucks, bait, movies, restaurants, etc. The main difference is that the fishing equipment will be improved, and maybe the cars also, but the milk, groceries, etc, will still taste/be the same!!!
4) Keep in mind that you will NEVER make money on your used equipment...and the longer you put it off...the less you will recoup.
5) The main thing is that FISHING IS FUN!!!, no matter where it's at or what type it is, so adapt to where you are, and if you don't like where you are, dream about being where you want to be, doing the type of fishing you love!

Don't sell ... it will only cost you more in the future to repurchase. Shift your fishing efforts locally. When my girl was born in 2001 my fishing time went to zero ... I did not start fishing seriously again until 2003.
Not sure what you do for a living but focus some energy on making your future brighter however you can do that. That is not an easy thing to do but try and look for ways to have a more secure future and earn you money. More money will let you fish a little more.

Sure there will be some latest and greatest gear coming in the future. But who needs the latest and greatest anyway? If what you have works well for what you do and it's quality stuff then it'll work for many many years to come. The stuff ain't getting cheaper and sometimes the fancy gear is all alot of glitz that doesn't improve your fishing success.

Nothing bad lasts for ever. This too shall pass away. Take a season off and fish locally or fish freshwater. Then when things things get back to normal, and they will, you can get back to your fishing fun. Gas may never see $2.00 again, but it sill get back to upper $2's or lower $3's.
