I know rays aren't too picky on what they eat.
However, until yesterday I didn't know they ate BW Fishbites.
I almost lost a brand new 9' Lami Super Surf yesterday thanks to one about 35lb or so.
I got the rod Monday, and I was able to fish it Tuesday morning. I had my daughter in toe, and I don't lure fish when she's with me.
I had a triple bottom rig with 1/0 circles and the Fishbites out for Roundhead.
In a PVC rod holder.
With the drag a little too tight.
As we were packing up ... she decided she wanted to go to the park about 1/2 after getting to the beach ... I looked back from my pier cart to see my rod holder on the sand.
And my rod getting pulled into the water.
I ran, jumped into the water and got there just in time. Way too close for comfort.
I got the ray to the surf, got most of my line back and broke it off.
I learned a couple of things:
Rays eat Fishbites.
Lami's new SS rods handle a 35lb ray without breaking a sweat.
The Fishing Gods don't like me using that sweet new Lami as a bait rod.
Last but not least ... keep my drag loose when fishin' Fishbites.

serves ya right. What comes around goess around.
But the real ironic thing is ...you loose the tackle...me or Neil find your tackle...and we re-sell$$$ it back to you....
so keep fishing them triple rigs w/ BWFB's...and we'll keep selling you back tackle :D...ya big dummy!

Who do you think found Neil's tackle ... ?
And he lost a whole lot more than a white bucket, a cheap bait knife, a cheap combo and a tackle tray. :p
did you just use a small strip of FBs by iteself? or tipped it?

Yeah, yeah, yeah.
You know, I've caught croaker, spot, pups, specks, black drum, roundhead and probably more with them BWFBs.
Never have caught a striped bass or bluefish with them, though.
I guess anything's possible.

I had one hit my BWFBs Saturday. Either that or he ran into it. The top hook was on his wing, I image the bottom hook was either dangling around or he ate it. I just got him straight up and down on the pier and cut the line.

lol, sound like you learned the hard way that rays eat bwfb like i did.
i was fishing from a yak at the hrbt and felt a nibble. i set the hook and the fish didnt move, the kayak did. next thing i know my anker and i are being drug all around by something big. first thought was, "im NOT losing this big fish." once i finally got it up to the yak and saw it i started to relax and let my gaurd down. BAD idea. big fish right next the kayak = no no. he took off and i almost turtled he was stripping my penn spinning reel with 20lb berkley bg like nothing. finally got my line back and bit the line. then hustled my arse to the beach.
and that was my first kayak fishing adventure...
