I would love to catch one of these puppies one day. Nice catch to these guys who caught them.

Yes, I've been to Alaska many times, Halibut fishing twice. it's as close to a sure thing as it gets in fishing. The ocean floor must be littered with them. I caught about 40 in one day, mostly 20-30 pounders, that was in 8 foot seas. Another memorable day, I caught about 15. There are headboats and it's runs about $125 a day. Some boats can combine halibut and salmon, which makes a good mixed bag. Also available are "rockfish", a number of bottom dwellers that will take jigs while your halibut fishing. You need to be in shape as the gear is stand up tuna rigs, very large Penn international reels with heavy stout rods. I'll bet the rod and reel weighs over 15 pounds itself before adding 3-5 pounds of lead. I was fishing in 400 foot of water the day I caught 15. I saw a few over 100 pounds landed, they shoot them. The best eaters are about 40 pounds, it's a two fish limit. You got to be careful not to over cook it, it dries out like a SOB, I like to marinate it to add moisture which gives me some room for error on the cooking. Oh, yeah, whole sockeye salmon heads for bait.

Maybe one day....maybe.... probably have to wait until retirement and i hope I'll still have stamina.

Having to work to earn a living sucks...
