Coca Cola and a tooth brush................ Soak it for a bit the brush it on and remove the crud... works very well.

Coca Cola...as well as it works as a solvent it's a wonder people still drink it....

White vinegar works best. I use it to remove corrosion from reels. In the case of a guide, however, juist like on reels, there will probably be some pitting, so check the ring to make sure it's still smooth (draw a piece of nylon stocking through it, etc), if you are considering using them rather than "collecting".
