Im quite new to plugging and fishing with jigs , as i do not know the difference between the two i have decided to come to you guys and see what i can learn from the best of the best. well to begin with can anyone explain to me what the diffrence is?i know a rapala is a jig and a gotcha plug is a plug but why, dont you jig a plug too? anyway ive been wanting to catch a cuda for a while and was wondering what "plugs" or "jigs" work well for them? i will be fishing the surf and some piers. i love the jigs and stuff but have never had much luck with them and eventually my dad just sees no point in me using them, so here i go trying to prove him wrong as i did with the "that bait is too big" and "what are you planning to catch with that huge hook" theories. mainly i want another alternative to squid, im tired of it, i like a change here and there! thanks in advance!

jigs are anything metal, that you usually bounce on the bottom.
or troll/retrieve it so it swims and flashes
so.. jigs/bucktails/tins/balls/spoons

plugs is everything else.
so.. poppers/swimmers/sinkers/floaters/joints

i myself dont lure fish religiously.
but i throw tins and jigs while my deadstick is soaking .

Cuda will hit anything shiny and fast moving.

A simple 1-2oz silver spoon and a fast retrieve will get cuda to hit, if they are around.

You give up on sharks already?

BTW, cudas make great shark bait...;)

I bought a lure for barracuda when I lived in Key West.
It looked like a piece of plastic jump rope with hooks on it and it was a bright yellow green color. I dont recall the name of it.

It worked really well.

I did a lot of saltwater fishing while in CA. They use two types of "JIGS". The regular jigs that you drop off the boat and retrieve "YO YO" style or cast to schooling tuna, barracudas, etc are often referred to a "fishing the iron". These jigs are not metal or silver in color but long jigs that are not made of lead as they can be fished on the surface as well as mid-depths or bottom bounced. They are not like 6 oz Stingsilvers or diamond jigs...

Confusing - but that is California "fishing the iron" style...

Your dad is set in his thinkin and you can't change that. Some guys are like that. What I would suggest as you can try different things and go with what works for you. I was VERY skeptical when Berkley came out with the Gulp line but I can tell you the stuff works. I use both still today and catch fish.

lol wooooo
somebody who understands me too

this is a cheesy ass way to be friends, lol

lol, sometimes people meet becouse of their similarities, i dont see that cheesy! but yea i do get what you mean, like ruddee said just ask around and try em out, eventually it will get to the point that you find that one that works, the one that will have your dad green with envy and then thats when he starts laying back on the "stop using that and use something that works" theory trust me i did it to my dad with his "theres no fish big enough for that bait here" and his "what are you going to catch with that big ass hook" theory it just takes time.I mean i dont see why my rapalas never catch me fish in salt and for some reason in fresh its like a frenzy! its just a matter of action and wether the fish are around or not becouse remember think about it if your using the right plug or jig would a fish rather a dead floating bloodworm or a wiggly, actionful, beautiful yo-zury swimming right across their face?justask away about your area and where you fish and eventually youll get an answer.

inshore angler- if youre looking for cuda dont be afraid to put one of those grunts on your sargus. you may be surprised at th size of the cuda that bite. for jigs and plugs, since you live in miami, im assming that youve heard of a flare hawk jig(used for snook) buy one of those in a bright chartruse color ,* put it on the captiva, cast out and reel in as fast as possible. and DO NOT give up on it within a few casts. just keep at it , if theres a cuda around its bound to hit it. also , before you start reeling in with it sometimes let it sinkfor a few feet, that may be all it takes to geta strike.btw, im 16 too but my dad isnt as hard pressed on his ways. and ill be in the palm beach area this week so if you want to fish just hit me up on here

any local tackle shop should have them too. if you ask, they may even tell you where to get some cudas at.
