Blew up my 7000 ambasador this weekend. Full report on the fishing to come later. I figured I would ask some questions on the repair of the reel first. While houling a 5' or so black tip the reel exploded on me.
I belive the reel dates to about 1978 model. It is a CS/levelwind reel. The spool is a two part spool. The threads striped under the pressure and blew the left side plate off the frame. What I need to know is....

1) will a modern CS frame fit the older ABU's or do I need to search for this eras frame. I am assuming the parts that the screws go into striped since they were no where to be found hence rendering the frame shot!

2) will a one piece new style spool fit this same reel or again do I need to find an old two piece spool?

3) is this reel now shot because of the age and the extent of damage?

I really hate to retire this reel because it casts great for a levelwind and I use it for my wife and others who cannot fight a fish and level the line by hand.

Here is a cropped pic

I am assuming the parts that the screws go into striped since they were no where to be found hence rendering the frame shot! Yes, a modern CS frame will fit older Abus. Just make sure the frame is for a 7000/7500, not a 7000i. The part number is 6900

2) will a one piece new style spool fit this same reel or again do I need to find an old two piece spool? I don't think I've ever seen a two-piece 7000 spool; every one I've seen are one piece with a fixed spindle. Unless the reel is older than dirt, I believe a replacement spool should fit. The part number is 975151

3) is this reel now shot because of the age and the extent of damage? Absolutely not! The beauty of a quality reel like an Abu is that you can repair and replace parts and have it working like new. If you could take a couple more pics of the damaged areas, I could help you through figuring out what parts you'd need to get it back to 100%. Or, if you'd prefer to send it to someone, try Jerry Foran (google it for his contact info). He specializes in vintage Ambassadors. :)

I bought this reel from here and the guy told me he bought it new in 78. I was born in 78 and 30 aint quite dirt age I hope. It is absolutely a two piece spool. I got both pieces sittin on my table at home.

Huh, interesting. I don't know if I've seen a spool like that. I wonder if it's broken so cleanly that it looks like a 2-piece; see, the 7000/7500 spools have a pair of "grooves" on each side, and under enough pressure, I'd think it'd pop cleanly.

Anyhow, the spool looks just like a standard 7000/7500 spool (although without measuring it, it'd be hard to give you a 100% confirmation). I'm 99% sure the part number I listed above will fit.

As for the frame, are the side plate screws broken off and jammed in the studs? If you can't back out all three, you'll have to get a new frame (see part number in post above), but if you can back out all three of the broken screws, you can probably reuse the frame. That's a standard 7000/7500 CS frame.

Also, make sure the new spool and frame you get is for a 7000/7500, not a 7000i. Hope this helps. :)

OK so upon further investigation the spool is actually 3 part spool. It is definately a screwed on system. Probably just broke a antique! Looking at cost of replacing the spool and the frame I could almost buy 2 new 7000c3's. Thought it would be a bit cheaper then that.

Dude, you could have eBay'ed that bad boy and gotten yourself a couple of new reels! Well, maybe not, but who knows :p

Looking at cost of replacing the spool and the frame I could almost buy 2 new 7000c3's. Thought it would be a bit cheaper then that. First of all, I think you'd be hard pressed to find any more new 7000 C3's. They've all become the 7000i C3's, which are not made in Sweden. Also, contact Jerry Foran; he should be able to get you the spool and frame for less than $50. Barring that, you might just want to keep it around as a donor reel. :)

That's a tough way to learn the golden rule of fighting big fish , "Thou shalt not winch". I had to break two spools before I learned. Good luck finding your parts.

My thoughts exactly Allan. If any one should know it would be Jerry. Going to send him an E-Mail to follow this.

gilly21, This is Jerry @ hookless.com.
I have seen this happen with the old 5500C spools with one side of the spool would spin
but have never seen the entire spool come apart.
I feel certain that the spool can be replaced.
Not sure if the frame needs to be replaced.
Call me @ 904-259-6039 or email me @

All of my 7500C3CT reels have that same spool or one very similiar to it. If you look closely you can see the seem that connects the arbor to the sides of the spool.
