Why are we even there? We provide almost 75% of the UN's budget, and a good part of the money goes to countries with dictatorships. The UN is one of the most corrupted organizations in the world.

As far as NATO goes, what a waste of time! Our only trusted allies are the UK and Isreal. I guess you could count Canada, if that even counts.

Uh, just a guess but from a PR standpoint it probably helps to be able to "buy" their by in when we decide to raise our mighty hand and slap one of those countries with a dictator around. :D

Yeah, I know a bit sarcastic, but I can't come up with any thing better off the top of my head.

I agree with getting out of the UN...and I'd send their HQ packing out of New York as well. As far as NATO, it is an absolute must. Right now, it's the only thing keeping Russia worried over their fiasco in Georgia and probably the NATO threat will keep them from invading other former "Soviet possessions".

I read somewhere that UN employee salaries were around $8-10K a month (tax-free) with generous vacations as well. I don't remember where I saw that and haven't verified it, but if it's true it must be nice!

I hear about a lot of UN deliberations and/or mandates, but as JLannon says, when push comes to shove in terms of needing dollars or a military force, the United States provides the vast bulk of that.

SurfCat, I think you're on the right track: it might be sort of an international "credibility" thing as to why we're still there.

I mean, I understand why folks saw it as important in say 1945 with the power vacuums in Europe and the onset of the Cold War, but I am not even going to get in to their stance on Islamic fanaticism or their criticism of our current administration after 9/11.

I think getting out of the UN is a good idea. I am disgusted with it.

I gotta agree with getting out of the UN. They're an embarrassment. I say stay in NATO, and if anything put more of the resources we currently waste in the UN into NATO. Further, rush Georgia, the Ukraine, and the other Baltic countries into Nato, then move a crapload of equipment there to forestall Russia.

I know there must be a good reason somewhere to play devils advocate here and say "We really need to stay in the U.N.", but I can't think of any off the top of my head.

I do agree with the others that we should stay active in NATO. However, NATO wasn't very helpful financially with us getting into the Iraq mess. Maybe they were just smarter or had better intel than the U.S., who knows.

A number of NATO countries did accompany us into Iraq though. Like, Poland for instance. You see the news today where we finalised the deal to put defensive missiles in Poland? Now the USSR...ummm...I mean Russia, excuse me, is threatening military action. NATO is looking a little more usefull everyday.

Yeah, I was premature on the NATO remark. At least NATO doesnt slam us publicly like the UN does, and then quietly ask for a 1/2 billion dollars to finance some little dictator who commits genocide of his own countrymen for personal gain.

I just get pizzed when I see the US sending a 100 to 1 ratio of soldiers/sailors/airmen into harms way to help out around the world.

I'm not talking about Iraq or Afghanistan. I am talking about every other fiasco that seems to go on around the world.

I was right about one thing though. :) Years ago..........I told all my friends that the USSR aint dead, and that Bush is making a fool of himself calling Putin a friend. The USSR is not dead, it has a different paint job.

Suh,
I was rather confused by the above note until I performed some research and discovered the LOYAL SONS OF AMERICA on this site were incensed about the NORTH Atlantic Treaty Orginization!!! I had no idea the CARPETBAGGERS had done hooked us up with a TREATY with the NORTH! LOOK AWAY,DIXIE LAMB! I agree whole heartedly that we must SECEDE from this UNION at once,if not sooner! You may be sure I will take it up with the LEGISLATURE in the near future,if'n I can get gas money to RICHMOND and TIME OFF FOR GOOD BEHAVIOR!! My wife, the BUXOM BUXTON BOMBSHELL, is promising to SEND ME TO CONGRESS! (and out from under her feet)

Bush may have seen Putin's soul when he looked into his eyes, but when I do, all I can think of is Qunt's sololique in Jaws about the Indianapolis...
"And, you know the thing about a shark...he's got lifeless eyes. Black eyes. Like a doll's eyes. When he comes at ya, doesn't seem to be living...until he bites ya, and those black eyes roll over white and then...ah then you hear that terrible high pitched screaming."

NATO no UN yes
I would also like to see us take more of a back seat in NATO also.

That is a good assignment tho.
I had it twice.

I agree that the USSR is not dead, and it does have a different paint job, but are they not just painting over rust? I was born in 1983, so I don't remember much of the cold war, but I sure remember hearing stories, and the fall of the Berlin wall. I really hope we don't have to deal with all of that again!
