I've been a firm believer for years, have witnessed something i could not explain, and have a friend who is completely about aliens being our future (good or bad i dont know) but ive listened to him preach about it for hours on end and hes got some points...having to do with 2012... the mayans... etc etc.

I do agree with you there is some fascinating stuff out there regarding the topic. Unfortunately most of it is psuedo science or inconclusive. I still want to believe!!!

How can we be so self centered, as a pople, to belive that earth is the only planet in the universe to harbor life. Spend enough time on the beach at night and you will see things in the sky that will make you go "hmmmmmm"

Good point. And why would we be so self centered to think they'd want to come visit us, given the fact that we're like off in the far corner of Siberia in a cosmic sense (way out of the way...)?

JeepMike, I smoke pot, i work 50 hours a week, also donate to 2 charities out of every paycheck, and i do many activities, but im a loser in your book. Ill keep my book closed for the sake of this thread.
No offense to you Metallica, have seen you around here for a while and dont hold a thing against you, as you psot good reports and never been out of line with anybody as far as I can remember, and I post this in good fun.... but I just cant help but make a correlation here :D;)

Heck I was out on the pier last night and about 5 of us saw 2 glowing orange lights. Maybe it was the 12 pack I knocked down all afternoon or not, but it was cool!
None of us knew what it was. Prob some fighter jets, we see tons of them cruising the coast.

Was out stalkin ducks in the sound one day in Dec 05 and they commenced to dog fightin over the sound.....knew them things could manuever but d@mn. Ive seen my share of jets, and heard em, but that had to be the loudest commotion Ive heard. Couldnt hear somebody standing 10ft from you if they were yelling at ya.
Used to have Google earth on my puter and found 2 F-18s flying just offshore of Pea Island near the boiler.

Ahh, finally an interesting topic in the lounge (aka "the soapbox"). Talk about self centered j/k:D Never seen anything of the sort, or convinced either way, but fascinated in the subject nonetheless. Make no mistake. Our planet is no galactic "Siberia". Could it be that we have got something going on here? Something that is very valuable. This planet is not just a dead rock, nor a giant ball of ice, nor a huge burning ball of gas. We've got the most valuable thing in the universe right here. Life.

The wierdest thing I have seen has been over the bay late at night off PLO. I thought these fast moving green lights in the sky must have been jets way up until they made right angle turns/ 90 degee turns w/out losing speed. Very fast objects. Who knows but 3 different people on the boat said WT hell was that?

Two questions, one comment, and summary question.
1. Life? Please define.
2. Does a place this include more than one dimension?
Comment: Assume life occurs in different places, where the places never come to be located on the same dimension. Assume life in each dimension, yet the life forms are totally excluded from each others presence by physics, meta physics or some similar aspect of science that is yet to be known.
Question: Could they even be aliens of each other if it is absolutely impossible that they will ever be together in a singular dimension? Now assume that remnants are left behind as the life forms shift between dimensions so that they know of the existence of the other but are still absolutely and totally precluded from ever being together in the same singular dimension at the same time?
(Notice the similarity with the old "if a bear craps in the forest and nobody sees it, did it still happen?" argument--although not entirely the same.)

Life = Carbon based.
2.) As far as we know; three dimensions. It is easy to believe in multiple dimensions when you begin to dive into quantum mechanics, which I personally find fascinating. I will dig up the links but there have been experiments in which a dot has been made to appear in 2 places at once. It is not 2 different dots, it is the same dot in 2 places at once, the science behind it is simply incredible. :D:popcorn:

Personally, I believe there is 100 percent life on other planets in the galaxy. Now I don't necissarily believe they have oblong heads and big black eyes, lol!! I just believe there has to be some life, whether it be as simple as bacteria, or something even more complex than human beings. Now as far as little flying saucers flying around, I'm not so sure about that one. I mean we are 4.27 lightyears from the nearest star, lol!!! For those doing the math, that's over 24 TRILLION miles from the earth. It would interesting to find life out there some day though, but I don't think it will happen in our lifetimes. So, yeah, I absolutely think there is life in some shape or form out there somewhere. I don't really feed in to the idea that we've been "visited" or anything like that though. I guess anything is possible.

So if it's two dots that appears to be in two different places is the image itself two different dots? Or conversely, if two dots appear to occupy exactly the same place are the two dots actually the one that they appear to be? Getting at.... are things what they really are or what they appear to be? If things are what they really are but we cannot sense or detect them (even with aid of devices), are they really there? Or are things only what they appear to be through our senses and any device?
Carbon chauvinism aside, what about silicon? (I know someone's gonna make the obvious comment here)... Here's a thought provoking article: http://www.dailygalaxy.com/my_weblog/2008/05/non-carbon-life.html
I recall hearing something about life thriving on the deep sea volcanic vents that lived off of compounds other than carbon.
Guess it's difficult to talk about aliens when it's not easy to decide what they are, let alone what they could be made of. Could like be a rock on a moon of Jupiter that somehow ages and dies? If it dies then it must have been alive, correct?

Is it possible that there's an alien planet out there full of alien creatures that resemble each and every woman that has ever been in Hugh's house... except the planet has the right stuff so that you'd never ever die or get old... now that's a nice alien possibility :D

Life? Please define.
Opposite of lifelessness. Biological, geological, & any other logical you can think of... :D
What is it that some of our scientists are looking for elsewhere? Evidence of life, past or present, and/or a habitat capable of supporting life. If there is someone or something out there, looking for similar things, this planet would be very interesting. That is one just one reason that "they'd want to come visit us, given the fact that we're like off in the far corner of Siberia".
And who is to say we're in the far off corner of Siberia anyway, it all depends on your point of reference.

however,
a mile and a light year are just a measurement we give on a distance. to an alien a mile might be the distance we think an inch is, what is to say that 4.27 light years is just 4.27 miles to them?

If their measurements are on such an immense scale, then aren't we kinda like the flea on the back of a flea on the back of the dog? They'd skip right past us like a surf fisherman heading on down the the beach and missing that 3 carat diamond sitting in the sand right next to where he parked.

NEW AMINO ACID FOUND IN SPACE:

amino acid article (very interesting): http://www.mpifr-bonn.mpg.de/public/pr/pr-nitril-en.html
Which leads to another question: Are we aliens? Namely, did we come from outer space (and not from the Earth itself?) I recall reading an article awhile back about a study that traced the composite materials in a human body to ancient origin, and that the composite materials themselves are older than the planet.

That's an interesting point. From our perspective, the stars seem to be unreachably distant. But perhaps distance is not the issue, but the shortness of our own lives. The distance would be no big deal to a being with a much longer lifespan.

There are endless possibilities really. There is no telling. I'm not by any means a skeptic, but I won't be a true believer until we have some hard facts. I do believe there is a high probability that we aren't the only planet with some form of life in the galaxy. All the documentaries on the science channel on the subject can be really interesting.

Man, i love the responses. TREED i smoke, i dont do acid...LOL.
Anyhow i saw something similar to the previous posted "bright light able to move at 90 degree angles without slowing down"
it was a white light, moved back and forth, changing directions without stopping or slowing down, finally picked a direction to keep going and disapeared. As far as my friend believing aliens are our future...he also thinks that we are an mixed bred version of aliens/cave men type people. i dont know what to say to him normally when he talks about the stuff...its damn good entertainment and its hard not to believe some of the things he says.
All in all none of us will ever know until we are face to face with a little green man....our planet is a mere spec of dust in an endless open area.
Again thank you guys for that input...very entertaining.

From the article: What nobody can explain is why the universe seems split into these two separate and irreconcilable realities.
Somebody tried... best to date is E = mc2 is a mathematical proof, but IM (very humble) O it fails to explain the power of the equal sign (=).

this was making me think,
if the universe started with a central big bang, where all the matter in the universe was infinatly dense. and then for some reason this super dense space matter became so dense that is exploded spanning out 360 degrees x 360 degrees around (the exact calculation is 4*PI in steradians (i think)), any way picture that as the Earth, with the center of the universe (as we know it) being the center of the Earth, now that would make us a fixed point on the Earth's surface which has some place directly correlating to it on the complete other side of the Earth, that would make more planets for possible life, but then think on an even larger scale, say our planet is just a universe or dimension, for every planet we know about there is another universe, or dimension. which leads me back to the previous statements about lifespan and distances, kinda makes us seem quite minuscule doesn't it?

There's definitely life out there!!! I watched a documentary the other day called "Planet of The Apes". It was the same as here on earth, only with apes!!!! lol
No, but I do believe there has to be life out there somewhere. We are only on the brink of what scientific discoveries are to come. I mean, not thirty years ago we thought all life depended on the sun. Then we realized methane vents thousands of miles below the ocean's surface support life. We also thought life couldn't exist at X degrees below zero. Then we found dormant bacteria in the ice caps. There is life out there, and eventually I believe we will find it, just not in our life time. I just think if you're looking for little green men and flying saucers, you may be a bit dissapointed. However, as I said earlier, I certainly wouldn't mark anything off the list. There really is no telling what we may find in future years. Hell, you have to remember, a little over a century ago the idea of man made flight hadn't even been realized. I believe one day we will find some type of life out there, but I certainly don't think it will be in our life time. Anything is possible I suppose, and if/when we do find life, it will definitely have a major impact on all we know now.....
That being said, I'm going to go stare at the sun some more. I think I may have just seen a martian. Anybody have any alien urine??? I need to cover up my scent. I'm going to shoot that SOB when he gets in range!!!!!!
