Walked outside on sunday and found a beagle roaming around in my yard. Being a natural dog lover i petted him. And he stuck around all day. Then that evening the boss (the wife) says, "You need to feed that dog, hes hungry." So its been 3 days now and hes still in my yard. He appears to be in great shape, well feed, no collar, no stinky smells, wont bark, and just does 3 things: 1. Eat, 2. sleep, and 3. follow me around. So far i haven't seen anyone looking for a dog. And i keep checking the local gas station for missing signs but so far nothing. I could take him to the local animal shelter but thats like a 20-30 min and i'm lazy. I'm actaully condiering keeping him, any advice?

you've fed him, he's already yours.
Take him to the vet, get all his shots. Repeat each year.
Enjoy! So will he!

If ya need a dog keep em, going to the animal shelter could result in a one way trip for him. Sounds to me like he has gotten attached to you already.

Just curious how long you have lived in your house? Could it be the previous owners dog that somehow found his way back home? Its unusually rare for a dog to pick a random unfamiliar place and stay and call it home. Usually they will try and find a pack of "homeless" dogs and join the pack.
Are there any female dogs in heat that you know of around your house?

Actaully i got a new mobile home on a vacant lot. We've been there for about 5 months now. And theres only one dog nearby and hes a male. The dog seems very mild tempered. He just kind of hangs out. I tried playing fetch with him but he just looks at me like "u crazy?"

dang, he had you trained after only three days......he trained you to feed him, and play fetch (or lack there of)......I would keep him, that is if you have the time and space to make him happy and not keep him shacked up all the time, also I would call the animal shelter and ask if they have had anyone report a missing dog. check the newspaper as well. If he is as good of a dog as you say he is, he may already have a family that cares for him, and I know from personal experience it is really hard to loose a dog, and then find him again with another family. It is kinda like finding out the girl you loves is shacking up with some random dude right after a breakup, i guess. All I know there is a fine line there if he may already have a family, and it would not be fair to them, or him if you kept him. unless they were neglecting him, then he is yours and to H$!! with them.

You got that right. People who think they're training their dog don't have a clue. Beagles can be very smart dogs.

I have a 1 year old beagle pup. She's great, so I couldn't say no to another one. Call the local animal shelters and see if they have reports and if not, hang on to him.

Check your local paper for 'Missing Pets' notices, and you might wanna post a 'Found Pet' notice just in case. Otherwise, enjoy your new friend.

Sounds like a good strategy! Once that first bit of food arrived, he found himself a new home. Keep checking the papers, telephone poles for flyers, and animal shelters for reports of lost beagles. Give it a couple of weeks and after that, you've probably put enough money into him to argue for keeping him. Good luck. Nice dogs!

well the dog seems happy and you obviously care about him so why not make him yours. If you searched around and checked with the shelters to see if anyone reported a lost beagle then you have done what you can.
I use to have a beagle and she was awesome, was a great loyal friend. defiantely a pack animal and had lots of love an affection.
But as said before take him to the vet, get a check up and shots. and Enjoy.
As said before Beagles are smart.

Best advice right there. I have a beagle mix and she's one of the best dogs I've ever had.

+1 it's sickening to loose your best bud. My heart sank when we lost our dog. We found him a week later. It happens.
maybe you'd like to keep him but post something up in craigslist since it's free.
If you don't hear anything after a few weeks then it was meant to be.

Agreed. I thought I lost my dog once. Turned out someone had stolen her and she was seen over a month later waaaay downtown wandering. I thought I saw her one day about a mile from my house as I was riding home on the bus. The next day she showed up at our doorstep. Looked well fed but happy to be home.
Continue to feed the pooch, put out an add, keep it close and wait'n'see.

If someone does make a claim on your dog then do all you can to make sure they are legit. Ya don't want folks popping up out of no where just cause they see an opportunity to get themselves a free beagle.
Check whether or not your dog greets em with a wagging tail or other similar "glad to see you" type behavior.
Course if your dog bites em....it may not necessarily mean they are strangers to him. Could just be his way of saying ...so long suckers. :D
BTW: My oldest son has had his dog for 14 years. She first met him when his owner brought her to our next door neighbors house. Dog took to my son right at that moment. The dog and her owner left and headed back home. I guess the dog had a dream or a revelation that night because the very next day she came back to our neighbors house while my son was there....by herself the next morning. We took her back to her owner's house.
Later that day.....she came back and found my son. Oh well....I decided to go and ask the owner's mom if they wanted the dog. They didn't so....she's been with him for 14 years.
We choose dogs in the pound. When they find their way to us....it's just meant to be. By chance has anyone close passed away recently? Animals have a way of feeling if other's are in need of them. Maybe they represent the spirit of someone now gone. Or perhaps they sense that they are needed to complete your family at your new place.

Long live your Son's dog. I just lost Levi my Wire Haired Fox Terrier in May 2008 he was 3 weeks shy of his 14th birthday.
I got another Wire Haired Fox Terrier a month later. Its hard to loose one after all of those years together.

This is good advice.
Random people respond to adds in hopes getting free animals.

I would make them describe the dog over the phone before I let them see the dog. Makings ect.

Some people also scan the lost pet section in order to get animals to sell to labs for testing, or so I've heard. If the dog doesn't seem to know them, or doesn't like them, boot them off your porch.
