Hey guys, I am going to be out on Portsmouth Island at the end of this month with a couple friends. We hope to get a'hold of some big red drum! My question is, we are taking about 15lbs of fresh mullet and I hope to get some fresh shrimp too. What's the chances of baitfish being in the water, and what's the best set-up or rig to use? I have never been out there before, and I have always been a pier-fisher (ocean crest)! Any feedback on rigs, or maybe even Gulp baits?

David, surffshr is right,7/0-9/0 hooks on fish finder rigs. I use 80# mono leader line. Make sure to carry some larger sinkers (6-8 oz) if the wind is up and even have some satellite sinkers if its real windy. Mullet will be good and try to get some fresh shrimp too, If there are sand fleas there use those as well, every thing there feeds on sand fleas. If you've never been to PI, you will love it. When will you guys be there? We are there 10/30-11/2 maybe we will cross paths.

Good luck and Great fishing!

If you happen to wander to the north end of the island, the preserved town of Portsmouth is a cool visit. No one lives there but the NPS keeper.

The village is really neat, has a lot of history, BUT BE FOREWARNED, IF IT'S WARM, the skeeters will suck you dry!!! carry plenty and i mean plenty of repellent, and head nets would also be advised. Look for us 4 guys all on atvs (mine pictured in my profile) taken at PI in may.

...and 832,953,675,220,089,320,000,000,000 misquetos.

The last time I was on Portsmouth I drove down the beach near the old village and stopped to look at the water. I heard two of the misquetos talking when they saw me on the beach.

"Lunch!" says one.

"Look's tasty. Do we eat him here or take him back to the village?" says the other.

"Let's eat him here. If we take him back to the village the big ones will take him away from us." says the first.

I rolled up the windows and locked the doors. I believe I exceeded the legal beach speed limit in leaving!

Bring a cast net with you, there will be bait around if you look hard enough. Also, bring a couple of pints of blood in the cooler to replenish your own.

Get you a bag or 2 of the Fish Bites in the shrimp flavor. They seem to work real good in the fall on a 2 hook bottom rig. You will be able to catch some sea mullet (whiteing). The heads and chunks make for some real good drum fishing.
