View Full Version : Outrageous eBay item

Today on eBay, I ran across a very interesting item. A seller posted "NIB Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500 Inshore Reel" as a Buy It Now listing for $199.99.
Thinking that this must be some tricked-out version (considering a Blue Yonder will only run $150) I opened the item to find that it is a simple, straight-forward stock Abu 6500.
The listing was Buy It Now or Best Offer so I figured "Why not..." and posted an offer of $10. ? I mean, that's not any more ridiculous than asking $120 over retail for it, right?
Well evidently the seller didn't think so. I recieved a scathing note from the seller, asking "why would you waste my time" with this "stupidly low" offer.
:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:
Was I wrong here in calling out this seller for an extreme case of overpricing?

No, in fact go further and post a seller review where you list the MSRP so that no unsuspecting fool gets taken by the tactic

Nice suggestion, that serves as notice to many. Just make sure the facts are correct.

Wow, if I sold my NIB 6500c3 I would not ask over 85.00
That seller is in a dream world.

It is overpriced, but not by $120. The Abu Garcia 6500 Inshore carries an MSRP of $199, and generally runs around $135 new (from FFO) so the difference is actually more like $65.
The Inshore is a new reel that was introduced in 2008 and is supposed to be a good bit more corrosion resistant than a standard 6500 (although how much more remains to be seen), slightly higher drag ratings and dual antireverse. If the dual antireverse is a IAR bearing and dog combination system, then they might have something there. This is because a IAR bearing and dog can handle higher drag pressures than just the IAR bearing alone so one could push the reel to higher drags...

Just for fun I offered him $10.99! Should be interesting to see if I get some snide comment too. We should bomb the poor guy with stupid lowball offers!:D

Question: On Ebay, if something is listed as 'buy now or best offer', don't they HAVE to take the best offer? No matter how low?

No, the seller has the ability to accept or reject any offer you send. It's more like a reserve auction, where the highest bidder isn't guaranteed to win if the reserve isn't met. Except here the reserve is whatever the seller feels at any given moment.

Here's the response I got from this clown:
"I am reporting you to e-bay. We don't need people like you on e-bay."
He's a touchy SOB. That's o.k. though, he can report me if he wants to. 100% positive feedback is on my side. Not a ton of purchases, only 75, but enough that he can report all he wants. Do I hear$11.50?

My understanding is that he is selling a stock Ambassadeur 6500, with an MSRP of $89.99, for an asking price of $199.99. That seems a little outrageous to me.

The 6500 Inshore is not the same as a 6500 C3; granted, they look the same, and I've never seen one in person to quantify the actual differences, but Abu says they have several different features compared to the standard 6500 C3's.

You're right, I didn't check the responses. I guess I reacted without checking my facts!
