Friday I was layed off. I am 57, just put a new transmission in my car on a credit card, and have one of two daughters un-employed with 2 kids, due to the economy. Its holiday time also. How would you feel, if you were sitting in your office, and a fax came to your office by mistake, instead of the main office, with the new name of your replacement on a rush order business card. You call the President, 2 VP. and no one know anything. One hour later, a Vp comes out and asks for the keys and cell phone, without comment.
Downsizing , I believe cost me. What in the hell does one(I) do??
I am devestated. How do I now afford Cobra Med Insurance, no cell phone, no computer, no nothing. My dad is dying in a nursing home, my mom is freaking out about him??
I am on my girlfriends computer right now, and god, I need a break. I pray no other on P and S has to go what I am going thru. Ill be in touch with everyone when I can. Steve Grossman

man that is a horrible story. with downsizing i would think there would not be a new person coming in to replace you. so i would think someone in the h.r. dept. owes you an explaination as to why you were replaced. hopefully you will be able to draw some form of unemployment while you are in search of new employment. i would check at the employment/unemployment office soon and see what is available to you. as far as your medical issues, there is an organization around here that gives medical help to people who cannot afford it on a ability to pay scale, its a organization called ''Friends in Need''. perhaps you have a similar organization there which can assist.
as was asked before, what kind of employment are you looking for and are you flexible to relocate?
i can drop you a few dollars in mail if you need groceries. i know it aint much but if you need let me know. best of luck to you.

I think Maryland is an "at will employment" state, and therefor they can fire you for any reason with no explanation, provided it's not a violation of law. More than likely the new replacement is being paid a great deal less than Steve was, as is the case in most situations where companies are downsizing, but still need people to do certain jobs. Circuit City did that about a year ago. They gave the boot to many mid-level managers and hired less experienced people to fill their slots at much lower salaries. For most companies out there, it's all about the bottom line and human factor doesn't matter much anymore.

I work for a national company with inside scoop on job postings all over the US.
In addition, many in my client base have national presence, and I deal with them at regional and corporate levels.
What are you looking for? I can keep an eye out if I can help.

management and middle management suck....that's why I had to take a break.
When I was running the warehouse and a major account slowed down, my previous employer promised to hire 1 temps that were helping me run that major account. There were 10 temps competing for the position.
I hired the most qualified...he was great, self motivated and had goals....deffinitely an employee anyone could appreciate....
2 months into his full time employment, 1 week before Christmas, I was told to down- size my staff. I had to lay off by senority. The new hire that ran circles around my veteren crew was on the cutting block. I didn't want to do it and exhausted all avenues to put him somewhere else within the company. The new hire would have done anything to keep a job especially 1 week before Christmas.
I had to fire him. I was very fortunate to have a good contact at a competitors facility and told my contact that I had a great reference and if he hired him, I swore he would work out. 4 years later, that new hire is a Supervisor, running his own warehouse.
Life has its ups and downs....but tends to 'right its self if you ride it out.

Steve, my thoughts and prayers are with you my friend. There are a lot of people with similar circumstances right now, unfortunately.
