Has anybody seen the show Whale Wars on the animal planet channel? I haven't had a chance to watch it yet, but the commercials for it look kind of crazy. It's a show about stopping the Japanese from full scale whaling around Antarctica.

I haven't seen it but I agree the commercials look intense. I hope the good guys in the show aren't Greenpeace!

You should pity Greenpeace. After all, they're the last people to officially lose to France in a war......

I saw one episode and it was pretty interesting. Apparently the Japanese use some kind of loophole to "legally" harvest these whales. They "claim" to be doing it under the ruse of research. They were studying migration patterns by cutting open the stomachs of the whales. I guess they couldn't attach some sort of tracking device to them and follow around. Whenever the boat or helicopter would come close, they would hold up signs saying they were a research vessel. Research also showed that the whale meat was being sold in markets in Japan. I guess the migration patterns being studied were that of the Japanese people migrating to whatever market was selling the meat.

Well, I've finally managed to catch an episode of Whale Wars. Nowhere near as interesting as I was expecting. They're definitely some Greepeace folks :--|!! It's sad too, because I like the fact their trying to save an endangered species. It would have been bad!@@ if it was a bunch of normal people doing it. These guys/girl are some pretty corky characters.

I have not seen the show so I might be putting myself out on a limb that will break under me but...
It seems telling of our society as a whole that people that are trying to save a endangered species would be labled as corky....

No, I think it's good their trying to save the whales. I'm just saying that the people on the show seem a little corky. I think it's good that their trying to stop the Japanese from poaching.

They are a group called the Sea Shepherds. The Captain of the SS boat was one of the founding members of GP. The fact is that GP and the SS are at odds with each other......

Watched it last night for the first time. It seems the Japanese are harvesting the whales under the pretense that it is "Research". In fact, that is plastered on the sides of the harpoon vessels. The crew of the Sea Shepherd is pretty hard core, but non violent. I can say now I've seen the show, but I don't have a pressing desire to keep watching it.

I dont know about non violent. Looks like maliciously launching rope into the water directly beside a vessel to intentionally foul its prop, stranding it crew in freezing water, seems kinda violent to me. Launching a chemical that when mixed with water causes the deck to become extremely slippery, so that crew could possibly fall over board in freezing water seems kinda violent to me, IF RAMMING ANOTHER VESSEL IS NOT VIOLENT I DONT HAVE A CLUE WHAT IS. If these japanese are doing this legaly under a loophole in the law for "research" then these "shepards" should record and report it, not ran a damn ship possibly killing the crew as well as your own. Maybe work on closing this loophole instead of risking lives in a vigilante fashion.

Well I don't agree. Who gives a crap if what the Japanese are doing is legal or not, It's WRONG!!! If the only way to save the whales is through vigilante action, then so be it. God forbid, if they think whale juice will give them a little chubby, they'll kill every damn last one until they're gone. Just like they're doing with rhino horns, black bear gall bladders, tiger penis', shark fins and what ever else!!!
Save the Whale, Salt Peter their rice!

Yes they are a veary hard core group of people. Saw the captain for the first time in the movie that the IGFA has playing in their theater called Sharkwater it was a really good movie untill the guy joined up with this vessel than it started going a little wacko and they got to ramming other boats and putting barbed wire aroud the boat and got a harpoon ready to shoot the other vessel. But i left not to long after the directer joined up with them. Id still love to see the rest of the movie it was really good and interesting i learned alot from it.

Isnt boarding or attempting to board a vessel underway at sea considered piracy?

I support what these folks are doing to stop or hamper the whale hunt...but they are really amateurs of the sea.

they should make some fake whales and Make some WBIED's. I am all about protecting Animals. But there is a right way and wrong way.

The tricky thing is, Sea Sheppard is claiming they are illegal and the Japanese are claiming they are legal.
They don't seem to be a bunch of seasoned seafarers to me. In the episode I saw, they capsized a boat, damaged a helicopter, and were just sitting there looking at the people in the capsized boat. Finally one guy, not the captain, launched a rescue line, off the stern to save the people in the water. I don't kow about you guys, but if I'm in that cold of water, or in that dangerous of an area of the ocean, I want some people on board who know what the heck they are doing.

I would like to add that throwing a glass bottle full of liquid is extermely dangerous, if not deadly due to where they are. A glass bottle impact to the head could blind the person , knock them unconcious to where they stumble and fall into the freezing water. Go out side somewhere and start throwing bottles at people. You will be arrested. I have watched both episodes of this show and i am disgusted. I am completely against poaching but these people are blatant idiots. The capt has been shot, detained and rammed by the coast guard ect.....
As for the inflatable boat disaster, Damn didnt they practice? Wait they werent even sure if the second boat worked when the capt said to get it in the water to rescue the others. This capt has endangered the lives of these people and is doing so in the most incompetent way.
He is a racist as well.

Haven't seen the show, first off, because I don't get "Animal Planet", but I have seen the previews! From what I have seen, I'll go along with those guys and to be honest, I'd be sitting there "thwarting" the bastards myself!!! Sorry guys, but there is NO EXCUSE for killing whales for ANY REASON!

Definitely no excuse for killing the whales. It would be nice if there was a better way to go about stopping the poachers though.

The Makah Indian tribe in western Washington is allowed to harvest whale's by treaty.
It is part of thier tribal lifestyle to sustain the tribe and goes back many generations.
When a whale is harvested all parts of the whale is eaten and or used.
I have eaten whale and the section of meat near the tail is great eaten raw dipped in soy sauce and wasabi. Also I made Hawaiian style raw fish dishes with whale and it is also very good.
Sorry Sprtsracer. But as a consolation, I dont eat whale every day and the Inuit people have been known to enjoy a good plate of seal blubber every now and again:D

I would like to add that after enjoying a meal of whale meat, I drink some single malt scotch and enjoy a fine cigar while listening to the elders talk of past whale hunts.
