Ok....
So my daughter wants to know about my family. Mom, Dad, Grand Parents etc. Not a problem, got plenty of pics and so on.
Now for the SNAFU..........
She says to me the other day that in the copies of pictures that I gave her she found pictures of my Dad in the Corps from WWII and of my Grand Father from WWII in the Phillipene regiment of the Army. She asked what they did. I have no idea. I know my father was in the Marine Corps and fought with the 1st Marine Division at Guadacanal. My Grand Father was a Tech 4th grade, (the Chevrons with a "T" under them) with the Phillipene regiment in New Guinea. My question is this, How do I go about obtaining their service records? I have been on military.com and the Nat'l Archive websites and I got a migrane. I curious myself because they never talked about it. I would like to know what they did and what citations or medals if any they were awarded and maybe even get replacements.
I tried once before with my step brother who was 5th Special Forces, Green Beret in Viet Nam, but of course he and his unit "didn't exist". The information I did get said that he was in the Air Force. Hell, their names weren't even put on the wall until Nov of 88 I believe.
I'm the last member of my family on my side so it means alot.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as to who to call, or write to.
Thanks guys and thank you for what you do.

i dont know who has all the answers. i would probably start by calling your local VFW chapter and ask them if they know how to go about doing it. if they dont know try calling the VA. i do not know the one place you would have to talk to but i would say those are a start.

Not sure about your step brother but as far as your dad and grandfather maybe.
I know guys that have gotten hurt on secret missions and cant get the Gov. to pay for care because the Mission didnt exist.
Check the County courthouse in which they lived, it was once common place for VETERANS file thier DD214 incase they ever needed it. Your DD214 will have any awards medals/Tours and Rank/MOS including separation status. Since the terrorist attacks most Veterans arent as easy to find.
Good luck Dogg!

Also check this book out. This was written by my x-wife's Grandfather, SGT Robert Holland. He served as a Marine in the Philippines in a FAC capacity in a horrendous battle to reach, and ultimately free, the 400+ Americans and other nationality civilians held by the Japanese in a University turned prison called "Santo Tomas". There are some really great and heart wrenching stories in this hardcover. He told me of a lot of gnarly sh*t in the months before he died in '06. This man was a great American hero, but so humble about it.....so I have no qualms about putting his name out there.
You may find some of your family members names in this book.
Hope this helps.
