Looks like for those of you that say people who smoke pot are losers are a bit misinformed, (j.m). What loser could possibly win multiple gold medals and be a pot smoker?

Ah, so because HE smokes pot then ALL pot heads are gold medal award winning Olympians? If anything, he's the exception that proves the rule.

Say what you want, but here's the reality: He will loose millions of dollars over a bong hit. I hope it was worth it. Kiss your endorsements goodbye, Michael!

Will it be the $100M bong hit?

The Toke Heard 'Round the Marketing World?

Will Michael Phelps' sponsorship deals go up in smoke?

The world is waiting, er, breathlessly.

When a photo of Phelps (expertly) holding a bong emerged on the web, the Michael Phelps Corp. became the latest American business in need of a bailout.

And Phelps and his agency, Octagon, have started bailing.

No doubt properly coached by his handlers, Phelps is being dutifully contrite as if his actions actually harmed anyone (besides the poor guy whose stash was at the mercy of the most powerful lungs in sports).

"I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment," Phelps said in the statement released (and let's face it, probably written) by one of his agents. "I'm 23 years old and despite the successes I've had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me. For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public it will not happen again."

The full-pool apology. No denial. No the-chlorine-gave-me-glaucoma alibi.

Phelps and his agents hope to convince people that this particular bong rip — like his DUI in 2004 — was an isolated incident and not part of a pattern of behavior that might suggest that he is, in fact, a huge partier.

Phelps and his agents hope to convince people that this particular bong rip — like his DUI in 2004 — was an isolated incident and not part of a pattern of behavior that might suggest that he is, in fact, a huge partier.

Phelps will now be tried in three separate courts: society as a whole, the sports world and the world of big-money sponsorship.

Society, of course, will forgive him. It probably already has. A FOXSports.com poll found that 79 percent of readers chose "He's 23, can we all relax?" while a meager 21 percent opted for "I'm dismayed, I can't believe he would do that."

As his sponsors try to figure out what to do with him, here are some suggestions that could take advantage of Phelps' new notoriety and street cred.

Subway -- "I'm Michael Phelps for Subway. Their freshly-baked bread is even more delicious when you're freshly baked."

Visa -- "Because while Dookie does sell the finest hydroponic bud in the state, he does not take American Express."

Omega watches -- "Sometimes I don't know where I am or even who I am. But I always know what time it is. Thanks, Omega."

PowerBar -- "I'm Michael Phelps. And I don't let the munchies get in the way of doing crunches. I reach for a PowerBar."

He has. He has hurt my 12 year old niece who holds MANY state records in SC for swimming. She is NATIONALY recognized for her swimming and trains 6days a week. She looks up to people like Phelps. People like him need to keep in mind there are kids looking up to him, if he asked for it or not. Be a man; think about others when you are a gold medal Olympian.

When people look towards athletes and celebrities to be role

Im sure that's not bud in that bong. I feel 110% sure that it is fine cherry flavored smoking tobacco, and not marijuana...after all, that's a tobacco acccessory, not a parafinalia (spell check)

I just can't figure out why he didn't use the" that's a celebrity double that was just impersonating me to get paid for the picture" alibi !! That way he could go Bart Simpson on their arse and use the "you didn't see me do it so you can't prove it so I didn't do it !!" excuse :p

I'm just saying.......... :D

I'll bet with his lung capacity that bowl was looooooooded :D

Tell that to tommy chong my friend. He did nine months for mailing his glasswork to another state.

You smoke pot and you are a loser, drink beer and you are a champion. The commercials tell the tale my friends. I watched the super bowl last night and there were a few beer commercials. No doubt i could be a drunk driving murderer JUST LIKE (leonard little) and still be a professional athlete IN THE NFL!!!! GET A CLUE PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!! But if i take a bong rip im a criminal.

Its the sheeple that watch those commercials and agree with them. Beer is sexy women and parties, weed will have you in the basement of your parents house on the couch or crashing your car into kids on bikes at mcdonalds.

If phelps was downing a 40 oz no one would care. I would be willing to bet all of my fishing gear that 95% of you dont know who harry j asslinger is or why marijuana is illegal in north america.

Why is hemp illegal?

OK CAN WE GET SOME CHANGE PLEASE!

Again...say what you want! The fact remains, he has lost a lot of MONEY over this, and, again, I ask, WAS IT WORTH IT??? Furthermore, if you are going to spend your time practicing all your life and place yourself in a position of a role model, then YES!!! He did hurt others!!!...those who looked up to him as a role model!!! He let them down, and he let them down BIG TIME!!! That's the problem with the young kids who excell in ANYTHING! They have no concept of what position they are in, nor do they realize how many people are watching them. It is nothing more than "immaturity"! I can't say I was any different at that age, but I didn't do what he did, and his "handlers" should have "educated" him a little better!!! These "kids" at his age, have no idea of "consequences"...a wide spread problem of our youth today!

But unless its a video, and it may be....I don't see any smoke in that bong. Maybe he's just posing. Still, it does hurt his image.

As a grown man, it doesn't bother me in the least. However, when I think about the fact he is supposed to be a roll model for young kids, he definitely shouldn't have been doing it. That being said, it is kind of funny though. Think about all the swimmers that were talking trash about him and the American swim team. Now they have the pleasure of knowing they were stomped by a pot head!!!! LMAO

One final recounting on the Phelps fallout…South Carolina’s finest nabbed a ring of nine in connection with the infamous Bong-gate scandal on campus…it seems the celebrity owner of the Phelps-toked paraphernalia strung together the not-so-bright notion of hawking his bubbly goods on Fleabay for a $100,000 large…i guess you gotta strike while the iron is hottest…but for a hundred grand?...i’m left wondering if the goods came with a certificate/inhalation of authenticity?...like an incriminating, smudgy thumb print stamped on the side?...

In other sporting news crackling across the police blotter…Jamal Anderson, the blinged-out ESPN Sportscenter analyst, was caught riding the cocaine train in a nightclub urinal allegedly..after getting juiced up watching the Jonas Brothers rockin’ the mic with Steve Wonder at the red carpet Grammys...

Looks like he came out on top

The Michael Phelps saga continues to surprise. After cereal and snack marketer Kellogg's said it would not resign the Olympic hero as an endorser due to his now infamous bong photo, some speculated fellow sponsor Subway would follow suit.

Surprise. After days of silence, Subway said Friday night it was supporting the Olympic swimming star.

"Like most Americans, and like Michael Phelps himself, we were disappointed in his behavior," Subway said in a statement. "Also like most Americans, we accept his apology. Moving forward, he remains in our plans."

Political campaigns and corporate marketers often wait until Friday night to release bad news. But in this case, Subway waited till the end of the week to support the Olympic swimmer.

But wait, it's not over yet. AdAge.com reported Friday that Subway was likely to "backburner" its first TV campaign starring Phelps.

What happens next? The swimmer is now giving interviews taking responsibility for his actions, expressing regret and promising to never, ever do it again.

That's the first step in Crisis PR 101. Look for Phelps and his agents to make good on his promises through speeches, public service announcements and the like. Stay tuned.--Michael McCarthy, USA TODAY

The entire situation is rather hilarious and embarrassing; not to Phelps, but to the local douchebag sheriff, the state of South Carolina, and the United States at large. The hypocrisy and ignorance is astounding.

The dude got a DUI at age 19. This is one of the most selfish things a man can do, drive drunk. You put the entire community in danger. Alas, the alcohol companies give out money on capital hill like candy, the semi engaged public laps it up unchallenged, hundreds of thousands die, millions of lives are ruined, and we go on without hesitation. Kellogg's has no problem with a DUI. Conversely, smoking a bong, which is undoubtedly the healthiest way to achieve an altered state of consciousness, is something out of line with their corporate image.

This is the same Kelloggs' whose founder touted yogurt enema's.

if i'm not mistaken hasn't your new president admitted to smoking pot and doing coke? heck, he is admired by everyone from bono to oprah, not to mention the hundreds of thousands of 18 to 25 year old kids who voted for him. phelps blow it for himself. so he lost a sponsor or 2, but i'll bet he still is richer than any of us. i don't feel sorry for him in the least. i'm surprised normal hasn't offered him a sponsorship.

The list grows...how many politicians commit serious crimes and get away free... Its harder to find a celebrity who hasn't gotten a dui or drug rehab. than one who has. If phelps wasn't smokin' pot at a college party I'd be more concerned. Ppl get a life, he sounds pretty much all american. Not only did he smoke everyones azz in the olympics but he just plain smokes. As for the S.C. Sherrif...the ones who scream foul the loudest usually stink the most.
