First woman to swim across the Atlantic, and she is 56 years old! When I first heard it, it sounded crazier then it was, because it sounded like she swam straight across without stopping. I was thinking to myself, How the hell did she manage that? She was accompanied by a sail boat, so I guess she slept at night and swam as much as 8 hours a day from Africa to Trinidad. Here's an article on her swim.

Yeah...quite an accomplishment! Her son is Alex Figge, who competed in the Rolex 24 hr race at Daytona while she was on her swim. He was in the Champ Car Series before it merged with Indy Cars this past year, running with the Pacific Coast Motorsports team. I don't think he has a full time ride yet for this year. Must be hard on him, knowing his 56 yr old Mom is making more headlines in the sports world than he is.

I can't swim across the Atlantic, but when I jump in the water level goes up an inch or two!
Swimming across it is crazy! Some accomplishment!

I think the title is mis-leading guys. The article says she swam from the Cape Verde Islands, off the West Coast of Africa, to Trinidad. It also says she started swimming on Jan 12 and arrived on Thursday. According to some of the posts or replies, that's a distance of about 3380km and she did it in 4 weeks?
Now, this is just my own theory, I think whenever she got tired, she got back in the boat and re-entered the water after some sleep and food. I think the boat kept sailing towards her destination while she was sleeping and eating. Is it legit? I don't know. I kind of look at this way, if it is legit, then I should be able to swim off the coast of California, get in a boat, sail towards Hawaii, get off before I get there, swim on to the beach and say I swam from LA to Hawaii.

The Guiness Records rules regarding a "craft-accompanied long-distance swim" are that the swimmer may come out of the water to rest on the craft, but that said craft may travel no more than 500 feet with the swimmer on board.
I don't know if Guiness was regulating this swim, but diving off a perfectly good boat to swim for 8 hours in the Atlantic takes more gazooties than I've got whether it was official or not. I've seen the nasty toothies that live in that water. I'll stick to the shallows and my yak, thanks.

I think it's still a hell of an accomplishment. I wonder how that guy who swam from Mass. to France did it. No way he swam straight through. I'll have to look it up.

But what for? I was the first person to eat my own boogers, but you dont see that in the Guiness Book of Pointless records. Unfortunately, I had to retire my career prematurely at the age of 4, for I was told it was nasty and rude, crude, and socially unacceptable.

Agreed. Atlantic white tips are pretty sharks, but I'll stick to watching them on the discovery channel.

That sucks. Guess the story was bogus. Swimming 250 miles isn't anything to laugh at though. They compared it to running a mile, driving for 10 all the way across the country. I wouldn't be able to make it out of my city!! lol It is pretty weak though that they tried to make it sound like she really swam across the Atlantic. Guess there's always still that guy that swam from Mass. to France. I need to look that up too to make sure it's not bogus.
