I have recently been inspired by the surf rocket to build my own air-compressed cannon. I came and conquered many of the problems that I had. But another problem has stumped me.
I need to be able to freeze my bait, leader and all, into a compact piece of ice that I can shoot into the ocean without harming it. Well, as a member previously suggested, I used a left over piece of PVC pipe I used to make the barrel to use as my mold. That idea worked great for freezing the bait in, but I am having a lot of trouble getting the pice of ice out of the mold in one piece.
Any ideas on how I can get this piece of ice out quicker and easier, so it won't melt or break by the time I get it out?

Also, I am looking for a great 11'-12' rod that I can use to help increase my casting distance without breaking the bank?
I have one picked out so far, its a 12' 6-12oz ocean master spinning rod, but its seems a little too pricey for me considering I only go to the beach a few times a year. But I want to get the best I can out of those fishing trips too.
Thanks

Where do you plan on fishing and what species are you targeting? You should try to match your tackle to the situations you plan on fishing. The OM is a great rod for the money, don't know anything about the reel in that combo.

Ask Sandflea about the long range launching systems. I hear they can be fatal.

I don't get it,
you have money to build an air cannon, but want a cheap rod. Why not just get a better rod and learn to cast?
much safer and far more legal.

If the mold is thin enough you should be able to but it in hot water and let physics do the rest.

People who build foam rod handles use pvc molds, and do use a release agent sprayed on the inside of the pvc to aid removal after the foam has hardened.
Not sure if it would work in your instance-- wax paper maybe? How are you going to keep this stuff frozen to get it to the beach-- keep it frozen ? - and doesn't the added weight of frozen water decrease the distance achieved ?
All in all I'd agree -- sounds interesting but major overkill and pain-- when the fish are biting- are they going to go after frozen bait as readily as fresh ? I think not, and if the fish are biting- your going to go through a lot of bait- that's a major problem- when hauling frozen individual baits.
Forget the air cannon, learn to cast, and get a decent rod.
If not-- I have an OM 3-6 oz spinning model you can have for $50, plus shipping. ( You don't need a 6-12 oz model if your not actually casting with the rod.)
Good luck !!

The cannon was only 30$ and was originally intended for potatoes and stuff but I thought I'd try it out as a surf rocket.

I'm on a house on the beach so the walk isn't far at all, but when the fish start biting, believe me, I' will be casting :D

MoB Cain, got your PM. The references to me and a launcher is a running gag with people who've been on the site for awhile. It's basically code for "You know the guy who runs this place is an idiot, right?"
Short version: aluminum rods+high-powered balloon launcher=nearly getting my head taken off.
I never posted the funniest video ever shot with this thing. I ran across across it a few months ago while digitizing some tapes. It's basically me, Newsjeff and his little boy. The commentary between Jeff and his kid is classic; while I bumble around in the background, Jeff keeps asking his son questions like Mr. Matt's crazy, isn't he? and You think it's going to work? Me neither. He's not right.
Seriously, I laud your attempts to figure this out. Someone will eventually get it right. It just won't be me.

Well.. justa thought then.
Tater guns are illegal at some beaches like Cape Hatteras
and the only PVC tater gun I ever saw that came close to throwing 8 and bait farther than a rod, blew up and laid the guy flat on his back, course he had stepped up to ether and gasoline by then .
Be care out there
