I saw some refurbished abu selling for half the original price new ($90 - $199). Does anyone have any experience with a factory refurbished reel?

Where did you see them? I would bet they are just like new. I've picked up old Abu's at yard sales, cleaned them up, put in new bearing and oiled them up and they worked like a champ. I can't imagine the refurb is much more than that plus some cosmetic work. That's the beauty of the Abu's. You can change out dang near any part you want.

Same place you always see the refurbished Abus...the place that gives you bumper stickers that say: "fish don't care what you paid". ;)

I have purchased refurbished Abus in the past and they are a great deal. I used to get them from a shop on the Eastern Shore of Virginia but from what I have heard, Abu discontinued that program. If you can still find them maybe they are older stock or Pure fishing is just limiting the retailers they now deal with for that program.

I think they stamp an X on the bottom of the reel foot...Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Yup but on the reel I don't see anything marking it as recond. doesn't mean they aren't though .... $23 for an Abu 5 bearing LP reel to beat around the river catfishing with, It'll work just fine for me ......
Has anyone here worked on the LP reels (lubing, cleaning).... I'm totally good to go with the round ones but haven't played much with LP reels other than just taking a side cover off and removing the spool

If thery are true factory rebuilds, typically the repair items that occur in the factory. Scratches, dents, replacement parts, etc.
I'd go for it if the price is right. I own several Abus and they are easy to fix, modify, and tune-up

I've picked up some refurbished ABU's in the past from ffo-tackle.com (spinning reels) and have never had any problems out of them.
Just checked a couple of C104's I picked up, and no X on them.

On some of the last ones I bought they had an area on the reel foot above the serial number ground down a bit till the brass was showing.
