i have always been intrigued about this and am thinking about giving it a try. i have read around and am going to be going with the TLD 25 as my reel but need to know what is a good fighting rod. i was looking at the offshore extreme by offshore angler. they have a kingfish one. it is rated 12-30lb and 7'. they also have a more heavy duty live bait one that is rated 20-50lb and is also 7'. are these good rods or do you guys have some suggestions. please no ugly sticks

either one would work I reckon. Not familiar with either rod but the main thing you gotta remember is that you generally dont put much pressure on a king, let him run out then ease him back in you want him dead when you get him to the pier. Lighter tip rods work well for this because it allows you to keep the line tight without putting too much pressure on the fish and pulling the hooks. But be advised you may want a heavier rod incase you tie into a large cobia or shark or maybe a jack depending on where your fishing at all of which you are going to want a heavier rod. I have an Ande "tournament stand up 20#-50# 6'. cheapish rod like 60 bucks but i like it the gimbal is rounded off so the edges dont get you under the arm as with other rods, fast action tip and plenty of backbone. One of the best rods Ive found for this kind of fishing IMO. Hope this helps

Steve at Chesapeake B&T has a sweet TLD 25 on a rod he's selling as a combo in his shop right now. I can't remember what he's asking, and don't quote me on this but he may negotiate a price for the combo. The price I saw on it was pretty good to begin with, but he may not be firm if you stop by the shop. He's located on Battlefield Blvd right beside the McDonalds. I think the rod was Barefoot. Not sure.

I wouldn't go over 7' for a fightin rod. I suggest a billfisher rod or one of those ande tournament rods. Both are extremely good rods for a decent price. I'd also suggest a rod between 20# and 60# rating. That way you'll have the, action necessary for the king, and backbone necessary for fighting a cobe, jack, or shark.
But that's just my .02 ;)

ONly thing I'll add is that I wouldn't either go over 7ft for a fighting pier rod. I use a 6-6" and have been since I first started king fishing. If somethin ever happens and I have to get another one for fighting, then I think I would opt for one of 6 foot, maybe back to 6-6. The shorter the rod, the more leverage that you can excert vs a loner rod.
Another thing, you don't need rollers for fighting fish on the end of a pier, if there is a rod you like with rollers then go ahead ...get it....don't look back, but rollers isn't necessary at all on the pier AS LONG as your guides are quality and not got any rough worn spots that could chaff or fray up your line.

I have the Ande Tourmanent ATC-5701A XH 7'0" Ex/Hvy 20-40.
I use it for live bait fishing with a Penn 525 or Daiwa SL-X 30 SHA for big beach snook and tarpon and it easily handles both.
I also have a Penn Slammer 7' 12-30 that I use with the same reels for the same thing. The Penn is a livelier rod with a faster tip, the Ande has more muscle, take your pick.
BTW, I only paid $34 for the Ande at Walmart. The Penn Slammers were $39 at Sports Authority.

As said don't get a rod over 7'. The best all around rod would be a 20/50 5'6"-6'6" MH. I just got a tica BCMB6651. Its a great king rod, but I got it knowing I will catch cobes.

You want a soft tip and a stiff butt. Between 6 and 7 feet long. There are allot of them out there.

BPS makes a model of the OM standup with a soft roller tip guide and a triangular foregrip. Wish I could remember the model number. Back in October they were offering it with a TLD 20 as a combo that I almost picked up last time I was there.
I'd get the roller model, then spool that TLD up with 65# MagiBraid Spectra. You'll be set for kings, cobes and anything else big that might hit your bait.

I use a TLD 20 on a Shimano Tallus 7'.... I have also used a 5'6" Penn mariner and a 6'6" bill fisher. I really like the Penn 113 wide as a reel as well.
I like the Tallus the best, the tip is really much softer. Kings don't require half the amount of heavy tackle we use. The problem is that sometimes a Silver King will take a bait, then the tackle won't seem like enough.

Not me, I'd stay away from braid, 15-20#mono and a lite tipped rod will land way more kings and as long as that rod has a stiff butt will land Cobia, and Tarpon too
