Its about time to replace my Stradic 5000. Most of the time I just order a new one. This year I thought I would see what others are available. Anyboby have any experience with the Soron? Is that coating meant for salt water? Suggestions? 150.00 or less, Primarily for metal for spanish and blues. Would be fitted on a 9'6" breakaway rod

I just got a 60 model in the mail yesterday. Appears to be pretty solid. I will spool it up tomorrow and fish it. I'll let you know. I got it for less than half of retail, $76.83 including shipping, thanks to a link from Capt. Hook.
It's not the coating that makes it corrosion resistant, but the metal itself. The body, cover, rotor and bail arm are made from an aluminum alloy. Internals are brass and stainless steel. I would say it is much more a saltwater reel than the Stradic, although I never had a problem with my stradic, since I always rinsed it after use and kept it lubed. The reel comes with two aluminum spools, one of which is intended specifically for braid.

Hey Sportsracer, Whats the bail like on that baby? Does it snap over like a bear trap or more like a stradic?

Very smooth and solid. I normally handclose my bail, though.

Exact same reel as the Soron...they just changed the name when it went into full production. Same materials, color, features, etc. Price is great!

Off the beach, probably my 11 ft Daiwa Sealine Surf, or possibly my 10' Okuma Longitude. From the piers/docks, right now will use my BPS 8' cheapie PowerPlus rod, but I'm headed to the tackle shop across the street shortly, so I will probably end up with a new rod for it if they have anything that looks interesting. They handle Shimano rods over there, so if they have the Teramar SE Rod I'm looking for (7' 15-30, 1/2 - 2 oz) I just might be persuaded. The Tallus Bluewater 7' is also a possibility. I'll probably spool up with 20 lb. braid on one spool and 12 or 14 lb mono on the other.

I bought one of the Abu 806i from FFO as well. Really smooth reel, solid construction, and the price is great compared to the essentially identical Soron.
I have the 806 size on an 8' rod, would be nice on a 9' too. It's big for a 7' unless it's a 7 heavy for togging, jigging, etc.

Capacity wise, it is closer to the Stradic 6000, but slightly smaller in size. I'd have to say it falls between the two. However, it weighs 15.5 oz compared to 21 oz for the 6000 Stradic and 14.1 oz. for the Stradic 5000. The Stradics have 5 BB + 1 roller bearing, compared to 11 BB for the 806/Soron. You'll have to trust me on this, but in my opinion, it is a MUCH sturdier reel than the Stradic. That's based on owning a few Stradic 5000FH's. I know they have made improvements on the new model, but I still don't think, having handled the newer Stradics, that they even come close to this one. Cost wise...retail for the Stradic 5000 is $180 and retail for the 6000 is $200. I believe that pretty much makes it a "no brainer", considering you can get this one for $68 and change plus shipping...about 65% less.

That Teramar Rod is the Bomb. I use the TMC76-MH with a 5600C5 Max-X for reds and the big Flounder.

Update: Bought the Shimano Terramar TMS-F70H for $99.00. Loaded the reel with 20 lb. Spiderwire Ultracast Invisi-Braid on one spool and Momoi Diamond Hi-Vis 15 lb mono on the other. Reel and rod feel really nice as a "combo". Haven't had a chance to fish it yet, as the wife was called to work, have one car in the shop, and the other was taken by the wife. May get a chance this eve or tomorrow. I decided to try the Spiderwire, since I had never used it before, but it has a "better feel" to it than the Power Pro. I'll let you guys know. Was just thinking...Got the Terramar rod and the reel cheaper than I could have bought a Stradic.

To any of you who participated in this post. I just received my Cardinal 806 and much to my horror it is only useable as a left hand retrieve. It cannot be reversed. If somebody has made the change please let me know There are no threads on the right hand side, which would mean disassembling the body if at all possible. Alan Hawk did not even mention this ,did he? I knew it was to good to be true. Somebody help Thanx

Give me some photos...I can't believe that. There should be a knurled screw on the side of the reel. Unscrew it and switch. Are you sure you ordered the 806i? Come to think of it, the handle for a right handed person should be on the left side. However, for lefties, there should still be a way to switch it, with the knurled knob on the right. Unscrew that and move it to the left with the handle on the right if you are left handed. Something isn't right, or they sent you the wrong reel. If you look at Alan's pics...my reel looks EXACTLY like that one, and the handle is switchable. I ordered from the same place you did. Go back to the web site, click on the "contact" link and call them.

That sucks. I'm right handed and keep my handle on the right, just like baitcasters/conventionals. Let me know if it switches, I was about to order a pair.

Got an 806 I and put it on a 10' tsunami airwave MH. spooled with 20lb ande mono. Tried it out today for a little while..no bites but glad to be in the water for the first time this year. Do you think this line is too heavy for this reel and rod combo?

Not sure if you are fishing OBX or not on a regular basis, but I spooled mine with 20 lb braid on one spool and 15 lb. mono on the other. When and if you fish OBX, you can switch to the mono spool. 20 lb. mono may be a little heavy for that reel. In contrast, the reel will hold about 300 yards of 20 lb. braid. Takes about 200 yds of 15 lb. mono versus 150 yards of 20 lb. mono.

Try a penn sargus
i love the way that reel looks. but it is way too heavy for my liking.

You must have found that little cog inside the reel on the other side. It pops out on most reels and you insert on the side your are not using. Penns have had them too.

Thanks for the advice sprtsracer...I may change it up to the 15 and get some 20 lb braid for the other spool. Just curious why do you recommend the mono at the OBX? I fish mainly around Carolina Beach.

Well, I don't necessarily recommend mono at OBX, but all them other big nasty mean guys that fish there all the time do:D They've had problms with folks fishing with braid tangling and cutting their mono. Since I'm 61 now and not as spry and feisty as I once was, and since my bones are pretty brittle, I'm not sure I'd want to tangle with them, LOL.
