I've been trying to fish with sand fleas but I can't seem to hook them right. 30% of the time they fly off mid cast, the other 70% fish seem to just suck them right off the hook.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Using sandfleas, to fish for tog, one just flips into or to the edge of the rocks. There is no casting, therefore, your sandflea should stayon the hook..

I'm going for pompano. And I hear sand fleas are they best bait for pomps.

Put the hook through the digger, up through the body and out the shell.

Yup, not much of a trick to it - in through the belly area and out through the shell. They do get stolen pretty often but usually it's because the hook is too big. For pompano #1 or even #2 kahle type hooks and best. Here, this is from the bible:

Ahhh. So the fleas aren't long ways on the hook. They are sideways.

I hook the sand flea long ways - I use circle hooks so that may be the difference.

Put the hook through the digger, up through the body and out the shell.

You have it right! You have to let the hook point just penetrate the shell from the bottom side. Running the hook through the diggers prevents it from digging(what else?) into the sand and hiding from the fish.

I use live, or fresh dead only.

If you should want to keep any, put them in a bucket with sand in the bottom. Keep the sand clean because it soon becomes fouled and they will die. Some people put bits of shrimp in there to feed them. JMHO C2

Of course I do and have the pictures to prove it! I've learned from the best! :D

Freshly dead???

Thanks Teach!

I mean those who have been dead just long enough to still get fresh.

The fresh dead; not those 'freshly' dead.C2

Just learn to keep them alive and you won't have to worry with the dead ones! :D

I have heard they will die if you put water in the bucket. Someone told me to put damp newspaper in there and they will stay alive for a good while. Haven't tried it yet.

That's a fact, just change the news paper every now and then.

I've learned from the best!

I guess I should change that to "learning from the best". I would have to come across as being too cocky! :D I'm just a person that likes to search for those pompano!

Now that's over; I can now reveal the fact that I don't use real sandfleas anymore.

I use my secret jig combo with fake fleas and it's deadly. Six Pompano in six casts. Damn! I'm good.:D No brag' just fact! JMHO C2

Pompano that are only the size of your palm don't count. I only count the slobs as 'real' pompano! :D

All of these fish were of legal size according to Florida laws.

Besides; how do you know how big they were? Look into my bucket?

Whats a 'slob'. I don't think that Pompano like to be called 'slobs'. Perhaps you meant 'slabs'? I refer to big crappie as 'slabs.

Have a nice day. C2

You are right about slabs, but when I catch them like I do they are full grown and are called slobs.

Good day. Britt

I bow to your superior Pompano fishing skills.

I'm just the old guy with a bucket in hand, filled with 'hawgs' to which they're often referred..

BTW; I 'cull' fish under 14" to let them grow up. Both crappie(specks) and Pompano. C2

I have been told by this woman for a week by PM about her Pompano fishing skills.:D:D I think that she caught some hardtails and thought they were Pompano.

I offered her free admission to my Pompano Fishing School with free Charlie Rig included. She has accepted and when she comes to Florida. I hope to teach her something. This course includes Fish Identification 101.

60 degrees right now and the flowers are blooming. Cobia fishing along with the Pompano migration should start momentarily. C2

Sorry Charlie. I must have misunderstood. I thought I was giving you pompano catching lessons.

Does it look like I need lessons? All in a days work...

(Same pic that was previously posted)

Not positive I will make it to FL this year but I hope to! I have to go back to OBX, VA, and my regular trips to SC. Oh - not to mention my new passion of casting tournaments. When does a girl have time to work???

There's a saying that once you've walked the sugar white sands of the Florida Panhandle that you'll return.

I do hope that you'll get back here. I'll miss you in class; teach.:)

I also teach cast net making and rodbuilding. Mostly kids. It's fun and they seem to enjoy it. They get a rod and cast net that they made themselves upon completion. No charge!

BTW; nice toenails!

Best wishes with your tournament casting! C2

You can't eat pictures. I have pictures of Pompano but too ignorant to post pictures. Maybe I need picture posting lessons? Besides the pictures are too big to post? Big Pomano=big pictures.:--|

Take care and keep posting those pictures of small fish. I'm saving up to post a 'trump' card. I have pretty toenails also!

Hold it in the middle of the road! C2

Keep sand fleas alive by puttiing in a plastic container with lid and many small holes drilled in bottom. Place in identical bowl with no hloes drilled in it. (to catch waste) Place in a cold cooler as is with no sand and high and dry. Take out and rinse in surf once or twice a day. Will keep alive for many days.
