But like they said a 21' boat out 50 miles is a bit much.

I own the same 21 footer. I have no problems going out 30 miles under good weather conditions. Once the seas start hitting 3-4 foot, it's time to head in. The problem in this story is that the weather was predicted to get rough. Someone did not do their homework before heading out to sea. A shame for sure.

Yup...and the seas kicked up to 5' +! Everyone down here knew the front was coming through. The wind was pretty bad from it as well. I hope they find them alive and cold, but well. Normally, the Gulf is pretty calm...except in these conditions.

That's good news! The other three shouldn't be too far away, and hopefully have their life vests on and are alive. The CG is now in the right area and can narrow their search! Way to go, CG!!!

Good to hear that the boat's been located.

The Coast Guard search was mainly by air, and was hampered by the poor weather, Close said. He said there were 14-foot seas offshore and wind gusts of up to 30 mph. Water depth in the search area ranges from 20 to 50 feet. The Coast Guard originally sent a 47-foot ship to search for the men around 2 a.m Sunday. It returned to dock about eight hours later and was replaced by a larger ship, in part because of the weather.

14-foot waves in a 21-foot boat...yikes. Biggest I've seen were 7 ft, and I was in a 55' charter still worried about getting home.

And the fact that a 47-footer had to be turned in for a 74'...scary situation.

Hate to hear of a missing Boater. But as usual some people are uneducated in Seamanship. We see alot of mishaps here on the St.Johns River to many times. A 21' er in the right hands should have been fine in 7' swells. Granted they may have encountered Mechanical issues. But no Mayday? Prayers for them.

wow. Another Boat Owner Made The Wrong Choice. the weather was going to get bad and they went anyway. the Owner was a long time fisherman. the boat was found 35 miles out, but didn't say they fished that far out. they got high seas when anchored and flipped. anchored wrong? most likely that or no storm anchor/rope. it seems no one called for help, so it had to be quick. Just a bad choice. you own it/drive it etc., you make the choice. everyone on the boat is now your child(lol) so keep them safe.

Man that 1 guy must have had God on his side. Dont know if they have found the other three but the one was found clinging onto the boat and was picked up by USCG. He said all of them were holding onto the boat but they became seperated at some point.

what's the water temp?

Water temps in that area were about 68 deg. Hypothermia normally doesn't start to set in until it gets down to around 64 deg. so that's the upside. On a more somber note, just heard on the news that a "body" was found floating in the area. Didn't say if he/she was alive, or what. I'm sure we'll find out more later as the talking heads pry the info out of the Coast Guard.

No body was found, just a jacket floating in the water a few miles away.

The Coasties are suspending the search at sundown today.

Sure, 1 guy was brought in yesterday sitting on the boat. The odd thing about it though is he really isnt saying what happened to the the other three guys.

He has said that the boat was capsized by a wave, none of them were wearing PFD's.

After the capsize they swam under the boat to retrieve the PFD's and everyone then had one.

They were all together at the boat and sometime during the night the others drifted away.

That's the story that's been on the radio most of the afternoon, anyway.

Terrible terrible terrible. Its amazing that they found the cooler and lifejacket floating 16 miles away from where they found the boat. That was a really ominous sign

Oh ok. The last I heard was on Fox News this morning and my man Bill Hemmer was trying to spell conspiracy(without actually saying anything) cause at that point the lone guy found didn't say much. I wouldnt be saying much either if I just spent a few days bobbin' around the gulf. I just feel bad for all of them. Terrible way to go out.

It doesn't matter what they did right or wrong at this point. What matters is that there are three familys suffering emotional pain at the possibilies that they may have lost a loved one. We should keep this in mind and not try to blame anyone for this unfortunate accident.

It doent matter if they are big shots or not, their PEOPLE! What if it was your son on that boat and you were having to plan a funeral.Dont be so cold hearted next time you state your opinion.

 It wasnt meant to be cold hearted in the least bit. Sorry if it came out that way. It was at the end of my break(3:30am) and for lack of better words 'it's a tragedy anytime this happens' but i couldnt remember their names at that post. This kinda thing happens more often than i thought till a few yrs ago and started listening to some mishaps that have happened to other people around my area. I have put myself in a position a time or two that I deeply regreted at that time and have a few stories that I can laugh at and/or still brings a sweat to recall. I have both a fear and respect for open water. So please accept my appologies to anyone who was offended by the wording 'big shots'.
