View Full Version : Your Ideal Surf Fishing Road Trip
Hello everyone. Thanks again for all the welcomes to the Pier and Surf community. A favorite passtime during the long winter days has been thinking about the ideal surf fishing road trip this summer. I am located near Knoxville in Tennessee and am about equal distance from the East Coast and the Gulf Coast. I would like to take a week and travel along from area to area stopping at good surf fishing sites. Early June would be the preferred time. If you made this surf fishing road trip, where would you go? Thanks again for your responses. LEW1

Hey Lew welcome to the family. My ideal trip would be headin south to the OBX or further maybe to the keys again.

Lew are you taking family or by yourself... if by yourself, head out in whatever direction you won't have the sun in your eyes when you leave... from there fly by the seat of your pants... makes for the best vacations...
early May I'm meeting a buddy in Hatteras for a week of fishing... from there we're going to hit DE for a couple days then into PA for a visit with family up there... when I leave there it's up in the air... I'm thinking NJ for a few days at Island Beach SP, then Lewes DE/Ocean city MD, Norfolk area and maybe back to Hatteras for a couple more days... swing down through Emerald Isle for a day or so if there's anything happening there and finally back home... I always carry sleeping gear in the car so when I get tired I sleep, when I get hungry I eat, and when the fish are on I fish... no plans, just go with the flow... :D

Welcome aboard! Say hello to my family down in there in Kodak, TN for me!
My ideal trip would be starting in OBX, head south to St. Simon Island, further south to Ormond Beach, Ponce Inlet, Sebastian, and finished off with sharking the Treasure Coast!

If you only have a week, then I'd head to OBX or Sebastian Inlet to start. If you go to Sebastian, then you have a lot of other options North or South from there.
Great ideas everyone, thanks for the replys. I took a trip to Key west several years back and drove back across alligator alley , to Sanibell Island, and then on to St. Petersberg. Looks like I need to try the Outer Banks then explore from there. So here is another question. I usually take way too much stuff. What would be the ideal traveling surf fishing equipment list for a road trip? I would suppose two basic conventional reels, one medium to light surf rod, 8 to 10 ft, one distance rod in the as you describe "heaver" size, and one medium action spinning rig capable of use for plugs, spoons, etc. Three sand spikes, rig building materials, hooks, sinkers 4 yo 8 oz, extra line, and oh yes, a large box of cash. ( would be nice if available.). I'm just thinking here. What have I obviously left out as a must have item? So what do you think? I'll be interested in your replies. LEW1

Sandbridge to Hatteras Inlet, further to Ocoke Inlet if need be from Sept to November. The norm for drum fishing, but a couple other rods to keep me busy if need be.
