Just curious how some of you guys do it. How many rods do you fish at a time. I know we all wish we could only keep one in the water at a time when fish are biting. I fairly new to surf fishing and thinking about tryin 2 but that is probably all I can keep up with for now.

If I'm by myself, two heaver's spiked, and I'm playing around with a pup rod or a trout rod. Catch more fish on the small rods, but the heavers go off occasionally.

I fish two rods, surf or pier. Jetties I fish one.
i usually have 2 bait sticks spiked, 1 thrown long. 1 thrown short.
then if im not lazy, ill break out the metal rod. and cast some jig or something.

4 ..... a heaver on each end with 2 smaller spinners in close for table fare .... but even that varies .... drum season I'll have up to 4 heavers in the water and maybe one small rod out :fishing:

i usually run one shark rig out (PENN 6/0 yakd out 200-300yds) then 2 heavers, one in the first gut, one in the second and ill have a trout rod in hand.........the shark rig i can usually leave alone for 2 or 3 hours without havin to mess with it, the two heavers will get picked up from time to time and im almost constantly pickin up trout, pups, or smacks with the lures depending on what im throwin that day, I never fish the surf alone down here just due to the fact that dealin with an 8' bull shark or a feisty spinner or blacktip is not fun when your alone and havin to drag it up on the beach so i always fish with a buddy if for no other reason than to hold the rod while i beach the fish........that setup works for me, that doesnt mean it will work for everyone but it does for me and i do pretty well with it, in my opinion its basically a way of keepin all my bases covered, somethin has to be bitein somewhere ............if im on the pier its only because its not crowded (holidays tend to be the only days it gets really crowded on the pier...."snow birds" with their zebco's in hand) so ill usually run the shark rod out about 100yds, then have the 2 heavers out on either side of that then have a metal rod out slingin gotchas for kings and smacks..........the jetty and i are not good friends so i tend to stay away from there unless im boat bound and facing the jettys
hope this helps
Tight lines and God bless :fishing:

Depends...drum fishing at night, two heavers.
During the day, depending on conditions (spring/fall) 1 or 2 heavers, a 9'Tica in the wash with shrimp/fleas/fishbites. 10' Tsunami with shrimp or small cut bait or a live finger mullet here and there searching for whatever bites. WRI 1023 metal rod. 6.5' Bass Pro Tourny Series rated to 5/8, slinging a gulp.

Since I like to catch big fish I typically spike as many heavers as conditions allow. Sometimes one, sometimes four or five.

Surf:
Standup shark setup yakked out 150-200 yds with a big bait, 2-3 heavers out, a metal/flounder rod, or any combination of the three depending on the weather and the situation.
Pier:
2 king rigs (4 rods total), 2-3 bottom rods (sometimes including heavers if appropriate), 1-2 shark setups (depending on laws and situation). The shark and king setups are interchangeable, because sharking starts when the king rigs come down.
Then again, I may go with as little as a single rod if I'm out with my cousins fishing the planks or chunking the surf. I'd rather give them my other two rods and have them out-catch me, as long as they're having fun :D.

I run 2 light rods on the bottom for table fish and 1 heaver out from the surf. From the pier I use 2, 3 only if it's not crowded. We do 3-4 if it's more than just me.

If the fish are biting, only need one rod. If they arent biting, dont need any of them.
Fishing 3,4, or 5 rods at a time is alot of work for one person. Will most likely end up getting in someone elses way. For me, at the most one heaver and one rod for catching more bait. If ya cant catch anything on 2 rods, why the heck is 4 gonna make a difference? Keeping fresh bait on one rod is more effective than having 4 rods out atleast half wont have bait, and if you do hook up you will have a mess.

Ideally
2 8-n-baits. long cast
3 6-n-baits. One short cast, one medium, and one long. Sometimes throw metal on one of them.
1 flounder stick. sometimes working the breakers, sometimes throwing metal or quick silvers
1 trout stick. mainly throwing mirror lures, quick silvers, or grubs, rarely light bait fishing for pompano.
case of beer
If only 8 ounces or better hold
2 heavers. long cast
throwing lures on the plugging stick, flounder stick, or trout stick
case of beer
In the summer
2 ounces on everything that can take it
2 cases of beer :D

3 or 4 rods because you can only try so many baits at level in the water....
i.e. Im far less experienced in salt than many, but Ive seen it where theyll hit the top flea right in the wash and wont touch the bottom. Or will only hit shrimp, top hook, and not touch the bottom. Mostly for trying different combinations til you hit it right, then a lot of times Im only fishing one rod, even if it's just to save bait.

oh yea dont get me wrong i love whiting, but im talkin about the little guys catchin hardheads (cut off the spines and give em some slices to the tail and you got a killer shark bait) and skipjack and stuff like that, whiting is table fare to me if their big enough ;)
