:fishing:my dad and i often would drive from Greenville,n.c. to outer banks for a weekend of surf fishing.as usual, weather always would play important part. once when we were fishing at Oregon inlet during the fall,a steady rain started that morning.being diehards ,we doned our waders and rain gear, loaded up our fishing gear and cooler started the long walk to the shore.lots were fishing on ocean side catching the big fall blues, man they fight.but pop said lets try the inlet after the big blues slowed up a bit.we found a nice place half way back to the bridge, then we fished with cut mullet and found a hole full of flounders lol we had almost filled our cooler up and were tired a mite, when these guys with a nice jeep CJ7 pulled up and lowered window a mite to ask were we doing any good...grin...,. nope not a bite we both said with the rain dripping off our noses lol man those were the days .that was 25 years ago,i now fish with my son and we do enjoy a 4x4 lol

Ive done that. But I'm an prick so I've been told by some stranger.
Couple years ago in a good drum bite with a few other fellows a guy pulls up and says asks the same thing. One of the guys I was with said "nope" nothing going on here. But we were chuckling with each other as we had already caught several big drum.
The dude was catching on to our front and says " well it's just a F-in fish". "Yep, sure is" one of my friends says. Better for you to be moving on down the beach now.
We continued to put on a good fishing show that day for the guy.

did that alot this past fall when me and mac were catchin drum in the kayaks.
boats would be goin by, we'd both be hooked up, just stick the rod all the way in the water so only the reel is sticking out so they cant see it...got to the point id only throw conventional, so people couldnt hear the line pulling off like on a spinner...

down a billy mitchell last april, standing there holding a rod and a guy stops and ask if anything is bitting? had to sat no, everyone that came buy was telling me how they was blues at the point , 2lb or so, there I stood with 12 foot rod pointed at the water with a 26" pup on and a cooler full of nice blues and black drum, the guy starts to drive off and the pup is now giving me a hard time on the rod , man, that guy stops backs up and looks at me , only to join me not 50 foot away, I look at him and said, 1st bit of the day, as I put the pup back in the water, miles of beach on both sides and I get the guy that wants in my pocket with me, I think that is why we lie ,

It happens to me a lot, especially if i'm by myself in the surf with a fly rod in my hands, catching trout before 10 am and then they'll usually set up on the drift side:eek::--|. that is truly why we lie, real scale chasers ask politely or go out of casting range.

I don't have to lie as I never catch anything anyway.
But in reality I'll not lie.. I just don't exactly tell the whole truth. I'll give them a 'got a couple', Been slow, Bite died off, Nothing with much size to it...
And I only give general directions when asked where I caught them. If I was fishing Hatteras Inlet I'll say South of the point. Behind the Motels is North of the point.

What fish? Theres fish in the ocean?! Haha... you know.. I generally tell people the truth when they ask! I don't think I'm going to do that anymore!

lol...it's sort of funny. If I see someone fishing, and I just generally ask is anything is biting and I get the,"Nope...not a thing!", I usually go ahead and give it a try anyway, because I'll catch fish were other people don't anyway. lol Of course, I'm not right on top of someone either, because I don't want someone to do that to me either. Now if I kindly ask, and I get an full report of small fish, I'll move right along, because people are more eager to complain if only small fish are biting than even give you the idea that any decent fish are in the area.

reminds me a couple years ago...down off 55. some guys set up on a peice of beach that they really had NO CLUE what they were on. I mean it was gold. the bar angled in to the beach, a deep narrow spot of current between there and the beach, and then the back side of the bar dropped off deep as well,...more like a little point, in a deep hole, coming off the bar, towards the beach, at a 45* from the first bar. idk how to describe it, ya just had to fish it, almost exposed at low tide, great current break....ANYWAY.....me and my buddy were fishing gulps catching flounder left and right, with about 1 keeper to every 10 or 15 we caught lol, well these guys 50feet from us, right where the point of that angled bar comes towards the beach are watching us and drinking beer, finally had enough and came down to the water and started throwing anything in a similar color they had. Nothing, we watched, laughed, and caught fish another 30min, they finally walked back up to their truck, sat down and started drinking again.............we watched a few minutes to make sure they were done fishing and casually strolled over to fish where they had....on the down current side of this bar...keep in mind Im not expert at anything, and certainly not flounder, but I told my buddy to watch this...im going to cast up on the bar and let that Gulp drift off to the right (down current) and Im going to catch a keeper.....it was like Babe Ruth calling his shot....you couldnt help but to know there was a fish there...soon enough thump, thump thump, tight line, set the hook and low and behold, a keeper flounder....turned around and looked up at the guys behind me in their truck as they just looked down and shook their head lol. How's the old saying go? $hit or get off the pot? Was a lot of good looking beach down there.
