nope, but i have stalked 2 puppy drum using a cast net in the surf, got within 5 foot range and casted the net, but missed(actually the drum charged off faster than the net sinks).

The following have found their way into my castnet in the 12 years I have fished saltwater:

Flounder
Permit
Pompano
Grouper
Snapper
Snook
Ladyfish
Jack Crevalle (a big one too)
Trout
Redfish
Black Drum
Lookdowns
Croaker
Whiting
Leatherjacks (ouch!)
Spanish macks
Sand Perch
And that's just a few.

Most of them were small fish caught when throwing for mullet.

...hapened down in hatteras week or two ago...shook out my net directly into cooler...often times i get tiny spot, pinfish and craoaker mixed in..thought this was no different and it was bout a 3" craoker , and wouldnt hurt to have an extra bait...get back to beach...cut bait for doggiefest..show buddy tiny "craoker" who then informs me its a baby drum..ooops...if ya looked closely can see the splotchy pattern..hadnt noticed..didnt have a spot on teh tail like bigger pups...

yea, bash me....

Leatherjacks (ouch!)

I hate them things, they get gilled a lot in my net and they are a PITA to get out once they stick their spines up. and yeah, they hurt.

Wow, yeah, that'd do it! So would the red that Fyrespider got! :)

I have never caught a puppy drum in my cast net, but I have caught several underslot black drum and flounder (along with small spots, pinfish, croaker, and whiting) when tryign to get bait.

That could cause a lost arm or "manoverboard"... :D

Caught everything on emanuel's list except leatherjack, and glad I didn't.. Few things that weren't on the list were triggerfish, sheepshead, balleyhoo, tarpon and pups, have caught them in the net as well as a couple of filefish.. Also caught what I thought was a cuda as well, but some friends said it was a sonet??

Forgot about filefish, sennet, ballyhoo and caught a baby mangrove snapper under the bridge at Tybee once. The next cast produced a fresh, stinking turd. :--| I kid you not. Alot of the stuff I've caught in my cast net was in the back creeks in Georgia, it's a huge nursery for gamefish.

I've also caught keeper flounder in my net on at least one occasion.

I used to take alot of the odd critters down to the little aquarium at Tybee. I gave them stuff like hogchokers, baby flounder, snapper, etc. It was also fun to take shrimp down there and feed them to the seabass.

Always have a knife or something to cut yourself loose just in case you cast net something big and get dragged in the water. I've accidently cast netted shad... they really stink.

Phil, that knife idea is a good one. When I tangled with the Tuna in the cast net I almost got drug off the bow. I had the standard loop around the wrist and no way to let go. Luckily I grabbed the bow cleet as I was about to go over.
