A little escapade from my past trip to PI a couple of weeks ago. OK so we get out to the island on Friday morning to find 25-35 mph sustained winds and a very rough surf, we decide to find a spot to drop off our camping gear and head out to the newly accessible south end. After exploring the couple of miles of new beach I find a spot that looks like there may be some good structure. I bait up and spike two rods in some softer sand and start catching some small dogs. About the third or forth, I have one on my afaw and am reeling it in and constantly looking back at my other rod to see if any thing has hit it. I get a 3-4 foot dog up in the wash and look back to check the other rod and OH Snap!it's nowhere in site:eek:, I'm standing there in disbelief, The 525 I just bought from Mike on here and my brand new Daiwa Emblem was gone. I can't believe it, I had just looked at it, then the waves receded and I just barely caught a glimpse of it in the wash, I run over and grab it, and see if it will reel in. No can do, so I play with it for a few minutes and finally get it to start reeling in with some grinding and binding. I'm miles away from any running water, so I check the cooler. A couple of diet cokes and the rest Mich. lite, so I proceed to field strip the reel in a steady 30 mph wind and she's full of sand, the only thing I have on hand is my beer, so I start dousing this thing and finally get it clean enough to reassemble. Shazam , she works again. fish the next couple of days with it with no problems.:fishing:

Moral of this story........Don't go fishing without enough beer!:beer:

I had to do a Nutrition report for the Medical program i'm in(1 more year to go.....), and I had to report everything that I ate or drank over this past weekend. Not good. I got WRECKED saturday nite listening to my bro's band play. I found the look on my prof's face quite amusing when she saw the total: 13 pints of bud and 3 crown and cokes. Should have kept the receipt, cuz she thought It was a misprint on my report. Over 3000 calories from all that.

Imagine those cooler-emptying days in July when you run out of beer....and go for more....yikes!

No fish, donno what exactly happened, The water was really rough, the only thing I can figure is a big wave hit it with the soft sand that was there. My spikes have 10" spades on them as well. You can bet I'll have one of those water bottles with a squirt spout on it next time! Beer is to valuable to sacrifice!

It might have been better to give the reel the beer bath treatment, prior to attempting to reel it in, just to get rid of as much sand as possible first, but I agree-- that's real (reel :D ) alcohol abuse.

LOL Great story there. :D:D I've had a couple of those but, was with a big spinner so grit was not such an issue. Did you land the fish?? that's what counts

Racewire, I am glad to hear that you got your reel to function again with the sacrifice of your lite beer. I brew my own beer and I don't think I could have made the sacrifice of a well made beer.
The obvious solution to a hardcore brewer..... Get some privacy, drink the beer, then piss on the reel parts to rinse off the sand. No sticky residue left on the reel either! :D
