Been eyeing one of these combos at boaters world and they are inching under $80 now. I would like to use it to try and catch some big fish the end of this summer in the OBX maybe a shark if I learn enough before the trip.

However. I honestly dont know if, when or what I would ever use that combo for again. Since it has the level wind reel Im guessing it wont be very good to cast from the shore.

Basically Im wondering if I shold drop the money on it or just put that money twards the jon boat and getting it ready for the summer.

Thanks in advance.

Buy it, use it, and if you don't like it, sell it for $50 in the marketplace.

Yeah its not a bad trolling outfit. My friend has one and caught plenty of Rocks on it. As far as casting it, It is pretty much a boat rod, and I don't you will be able to cast it very far. For $80 not bad.

Yea thats the thing. I only have a jon boat so the only place I could see me using it would either be out of the jon at the HRBT once in a while or from piers around here.

I guess Ill pass on it.

Buy the 8hp and a nice danforth! Then you might want to invest in a baitwell w/areator. You won't need that combo for anything in the near future unless your planning on being a fulltime ho and even then you won't need it. That being said, I have 3 similar but are gti's and they are nice, very nice. Not a bad deal. Saw the pix of your boat, great buy. You should be arrested for stealing!:p

I would not buy that, I have a similar set up, 6'6" ugly stik BWB rod. With a Penn 209 on it. You can't cast it, too freakin heavy, you get tired after just a few casts. Very hard to use the rod on anything but straight deep drop fishing boats. Not even really useful on striper trips. Put the money in your boat.

If you never use it for trolling, it is still a nice set up as a fighting rod and reel for pin-rigging for cobia or kings. That doesn't require going out on a boat and you can do that basically when ever you are on a pier that allows it. Great post in the bible section in king rigs and such by NTKG.

While at Boaters World (in Hampton) today I scored their last 16/0 size pier gaff for $24.00 I was pleased since it was originally $37.99. Now I'm hoping I'll get into a cobia or king this summer to put it to use!

Jeep, is that gaff a model with barbs? I was looking at one in BPS that I liked but the gaff hooks were barbed. If I can get a barbless one from Boaters World as they are closing out...

Yeah Evan, this one from boaters world has barbs. Having never needed one, because I've never had the use for one, is there something I should know regarding barbs? I saw the ones at BPS also, and thought that the barbs would be of benefit if and when I get something large up to the pier. Here is a link to what the gaff looks like.
