I have heard nothing but good about the Daiwa BG's. Just a couple of questions:

1) What size to buy for pier fishing and what size rod to pair with?
2) Better for bottom fishing or throwing lures (gotchas, gulps)?

Ive never owned one but have heard many good comments on it. They say this reel is built simple and like a tank, this reel can take a beating! The retrieve is a little too wobbly in my opinion but i am a smooth-reel freak so don't mind me! for gotchas and stuff i think the BG20 will be just fine! For bottom fishing or bigger fish off the pier the 60 or 90 will be your best choice, watch out though they are considerably heavy though! Great reel nonetheless, or so i hear!

Depends what kind of fish you are after and how much line you need.

I have two BG15's, a -60 and a -90.

I have one of the 15's on a 7' SP1100 Ugly Stik, MH 8-20lb that I use for casting lures and light bait fishing. Spooled with 30# Power pro. It is the one setup that goes with me everytime I hit the beach or bridge.

The other 15 is on an 6 1/2 Daiwa graphite rod I use for the surf and flats. 12# mono

The 60 and 90 go on 8' Power Plus MH 10-25lb or an old 10' Surf rod for throwing bigger baits. I will also hang the 60 on a 7' Penn Power Stik 12-30 or 7' All-Star 15-40 live bait rods.

Both are a bit heavy for casting lures all day. The 60 is the upper limit for frequent casting, the 90 is a beast. 20# mono on the 60, 30# mono on the 90.

The smaller ones, BG-10 through the BG-30 are good casting reels, the bigger ones are better bait reels, though they still cast very well.

IMO if you will only get one reel for everything, look at the BG-60. The BG-30 is also a great choice if it holds enough line for what you want to do.

Thanks for the info!! 1 more question; Is there another reel in the same price range that you would recommend over the BG's in either size?

Okuma Epixor EF-55a or EF-65a.

I have had an EF-55a for three years now and I like it very much. LOts of capacity on a compact frame, very smooth after much use and holds up well in the salt & sand. They come with two spools.
