I was just wondering how many rods you guys take to the pier? I mean a pier with a moderate amount of people on it. Also what uses do you guys give these rods?

i see you live in miami so for either dania or anglins pier to cover most basis i bring a light rod for freelining baits and lures, another lighter rod to catch bait, and a heavier rod to cast out smaller baits a.
at anglins (since theyre not strict with the 4 rod limit) ill include with that a heavier bottom rod for soaking big baits and a medium action spinning rod for freelining larger baits or tossing larger lures

Hmmmm, let's see:

1. 9' Shimano Tiralejo MH with a Stradic 8000. This stays rigged with a cobia jig at all times.

2. 8' Shimano Teramar MH with a Spheros 12000. This is my live bait/king rod.

3. 7'6" Shimano Teramar with a Spheros 4000. I use this for bubble rigs and long casts for Spanish/small kings.

4. 7' Shimano Teramar 15-30 class with a Stradic 5000. Another light king/cobia rod, also used for redfish and light jigging offshore.

5. 7' Redbone 6-12 class with a Symetre 2500. Used for spanish, flounder and pompano.

6. Cheapo Okuma combo that I found lying on the pier one day. I use it for sabiki rigging baits.

I also have a 6'6 Clarus two piece rod and an old Daiwa 5000 spinning reel that need to get matched up with a new rod and reel each.

On a given day during king season:

1. Shakespeare Tidewater Standup/Penn Senator 114H - King fighting rig

2. Billfisher Tournament Standup/Penn Ocean City 67 - Backup/Secondary king fighting rod

3. Ocean Master Cape Point 12'/Penn 525 Mag - King anchor rod

4. Ugly Stick BWC1100/Daiwa SLOSH 30 - Second King anchor rod

5. Ocean Master 10'/525 Mag - Bait rod 1

6. No-name spinning rod/No-name spinning reel - Bait rod 2, used for gold hook rigs, Gotchas and bottom rigs

I'll also throw my Jigmasters and a few other reels in my cart to switch out depending on conditions.

When not king rigging:

1. OM 10'/Penn 525 Mag - My big fish, big cast stick

2. Penn Powerstick/Penn Jigmaster 500L - Because you always want a big bait out on a good rod

3. No-name spinning combo - For all fish, from flounder on mud minnows to spots on hi-lo to blues on a Gotcha

I only take one rod with me to the pier. Only thing extra I carry is terminal tackle. Pier is conducive for bait, which means my go to rod is the 9 foot casting rod.

I take two, and my wife takes two. All in the 7-8' range. I usually take one longer spinning rod with no reel, just becaue I like to use a longer rod if I'm jigging tree rigs for Spanish and I have a spinner I can pop on there should the need/desire arise. I'd like to take more so as to be more versatile, but we dont have space to haul one of those surf/pier carts. I'd love to have one of those, so I could haul more gear!

Depends on what's running.

I carry the most in the Summer/early Fall when I'm pin-riggin'.

7' Got-cha plug rod.
7' bait rod for spot. (With luck I'll get some pups and sea mullet, too.)
7' sight casting rod for throwing a bucktail to cobies.
7' fighting rod.
9' rod for heavier metal (2oz-3oz). This is for blues and spanish that are out a ways.
12' anchor rod.
12' heaver for bottom fishing (which I seldom use). This is good if you like to catch rays and sharks, which I don't.

It's just a good thing my pier doesn't enforce the three rod limit.

Thank the Lord for pier carts.

most piers have a 2-3 rod limit but they arent very strict on this rule. so normally most people will have four rods.

I take three for myself, and my dad takes two.

1) 7' spinning rod for bait catching, small plugs and lures.

2) 6'6" conventional i use for bottom fishing and snook fishing.

3) And my favorite, my 9' spinning rod that i have paired up with a Penn sargus. This one is solely for anything that has teeth, small to medium sharks, cudas, etc.

My dad takes:

1) Cheap daiwa combo used for bait.

2) His daiwa emcast. He uses it for toothies, bottom, and snook fishing.

I know it's an old post, but I just had to laugh at the multitude of answers you got. From 1 guy who could tell you everything right down to the size of his rod butt to some guy who basically takes what he's got. Fisherman are strange people aren't we. Always wanting to be ready for what ever comes by. For what it's worht, I have only been fishing here for a few times and I always take 2 rods. One for that kingfish that I'm going to catch one day. But so far, I've caught junk and never got a chance to use the big one yet. But , someday I'm gonna catch me a little grunt and hook him up to my king rig and let her fly. Watching that float with slack drag and some day.........buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

1 rod with a red or white jig head, bags of chartreuse, white and nuclear chicken colored gulp, spare jig heads and a gotcha plug and a few fish finder rigs just in case. More than one rod ends up spreading too much of my attention when i could diligently work one set up at a time and find out whats working thoroughly yet quickly.

If you go to Point Lookout to fish you better bring a min. of 6 rods a person and dont throw more the 3oz of lead so you can drift and catch other lines. HAHAHAHAHA

Thats about how the Buckroe pier is every time I go. I have seen people on the end tryin to fish 6 poles at one time literally. Its pretty rediculous.

I have never needed more than three poles at a fishing pier no matter what I am fishing for. Most of the time I bring a 12' heaver for cobes and a bait/lure rod. sometimes ill bring an ultralight crappie rod to bow up on baitfish for a little excitement
