I'm looking for a good line for "general" surf fishing in the 20# range. Not sure what brands you guys would recommend. Been a long time since my old surf fishing days. This line will be used on a surf casting set up med/heavy rod and a Penn 525mag reel. Also do you guys like clear of florescent lines. I like florescent but just looking for advice. I got on Bass Pro Shops site and there are so many lines that I was just wondering what would suit my needs the best. Thanks for the help, Dave
PS: right now the reel is loaded with 17# Sufix Siege

Line brand loyalty is like any brand loyalty.... people stick to what they have confidence in, what works for their style and situation...
For me, you have the best general purpose mono on your reel already. I've been a Sufix fan since the first time I tried a spool of Tritanium. I like the Siege and Tritanium for general use and have some Tangerine Tritanium on my SX right now.
I too prefer a bright (floro) line for my running line and clear for my leader material. I just like to be able to see my line easily. On a crowded pier or beach this is great because others can see your line as well and less likely to cross your line. Also, I have a tendency to wonder around while waiting for a bite (scouting for lost goodies) and it's easier to see from afar.
I've had good results with P-line and Ande but keep coming back to Sufix personally. I now have it on my freshwater gear as well.

Sufix Tri+ and Izorline is what I use. I was moving away from the Tri+ chartruse color becasue it is very slick and not very friendly to my knots. The Izorline is a fantastic alternative. If you can find the Gold Tri+ thats what I would recomend. I found some in Hatteras a couple weeks ago and bought a couple pounds. My #17 and #20 are Sufix gold and the lighter stuff is Izorline which I think has a slight edge over the Sufix in the #10 and #12 class.

I have used many different lines in the salt, but I have 4 favorites. In no particular order:
1) Berkeley Big Game - It comes in large spools, knots well and has good abrasion resistance. This is what I'd recommend for your use.
2) Sufix Tritanium+ - Very low memory and incredibly castable. A terrific line for all surf fishing.
3) BPS Offshore Angler Tightline - Bulk spools for $9.99. I use it on my surf reels and king rigs because I can spool up, fish for the weekend and strip it all off without a huge cost. Great line. More memory than the BBG or Tri+, so not good if you want line that will last a while.
4) Ande mono - Just a good all-around line. I like it for my king anchors in the 25#.
I prefer hi-viz line over any other, it provides a lot of benefits. For instance: When fishing at night you can pick out hi-viz line with a quick glance with a light. Clear is harder to pick up (I like to aim a blacklight flashlight at my reels spooled with Tri+, the line will light up all the way through the guides and into the water).

Oops, forgot the one I've just started using. Hi-Seas Red Devil. I picked up some spools at Boater's World. Good line if you don't mind the jokes about the pink hi-viz

Heck pink hi-viz would be good less people using it would make it better to spot!

An inexpensive all purpose "without getting fancy" and a very good line I use is Cabelas Salt Striker. I use this and expensive lines too but can't tell much of a difference. Other lines I use is Gamma, Sufix Tri+, Berkley High Test, Big Game and Stren. For my 20# test reels (Abu 7000) as of now, I use Berkley Big Game.
cost to performance.
+1 berkeley big game mono.

BPS Tightline is awesome specially for those types of fishing that re-spooling is often needed. Yea the memory might be a bit on the bad side but in my opinion a great line with great prices! Berkeley big game is great too but i hear the diameter is a bit bigger than other lines; I'm picky about that! :p

Suffix, Momoi and Ande. BTW: I'd stay below 20# on the 525. For capacity purposes, I'd stay in the 14 - 17 # range.
