How does a 525 Mag differ from a 525 GS?
Very simple! The 525 Mag has a left side plate with an adjustable sliding lever that moves a row of magnets toward or away from the alluminum spool to vary the amount of braking force applied for casting.
The 525 GS (older model) employs the same principles as the 535/545/555 GS in that it uses centrifugal breaks. That means there is no magnet, and there are small plastic "tubes" that spin out based on centrifugal force to "scrape" the sides of a "drum" (kind of like a drum brake on a car). The faster the spool spins, the more force applied.
Anticipating your next question...the mag is better because it allows you to adjust the force of braking.
NOOOO
they are 2 very different reels. they entire design is entire.
its not just as simple as 2 different braking methods.
the 525mag spool rides on a shaft and has mag controls. hence why it has more bearings then the gs
the 525gs DOES NOT ride on the shaft. it has a fixed axle. the axle rides on 2 bearings. uses centrifugal brakes. this applies to the 525 535 545 555
i use the 525gs myself. but i only throw bait with it.
basically in a nutshell, if you like the daiwas 20,30's youll like this reel.
i like mine.

Well ooeric, that's essentially what I said without getting into extremely technical details, when I said the 525GS was like the 535-555. I also could have mentioned that the 525 Mag has a spool that is completely disengaged for casting. That's why it rides on the shaft. I suppose I could have posted both schematics as well. I also didn't mention that the spool on the 525Mag is Gold anodized. I also didn't mention that the markings and logos are different. I just naturally assumed that TideJones wanted to know the main difference between the two.
