I plan on lining this with 30lb braid, coupled with a 50lb shock leader. Now I need to just find a quality rod to pair this with.

I planned on going with the braid...well...cuz...uhh...Thats a good question!

I just wanted to give something different a shot, so I figured I'd try my hand with braided line. Also, I've used high lb-test mono, and I didn't like the way it cast. So I figured the braid could still give me a better casting distance, with the same strength line.

This set up will be for surf fishing.

Nothing wrong with braid and I see your planning on backing it up with a shock leader, good move,,, ya will not loose finger tips when casting and if you do catch a fish ya can handle the shock line with-out getting cut.

I am not into the bigger spinning reels but that is a nice looking one, let us know how it does.

This is my first big spinning reel as well. All of my other ones are small cheapies that came with combo sets.

I'm not ready to learn how to effectively use casting reels quite yet!

Not saying braid is bad (or good) just asking a question. I have seen guy at all the local peirs you fish get MONSTER tangles.. It's not about how well you fish, it's more about the guy next to you.. A 3oz egg sinker and a strong current will make you wanna hit the fool next to you.. :) Good Luck

Its all good. I've been reading about braid/mono threads for a lil while now. Decided I'd give it a try.

One of these days I gotta get out there and fish with you
