I am getting a new reel soon and am looking at the daiwa bg. What other reels would you recommend in that price range? Thanks guys!

Check out Penn for a comparison; here's a link http://www.tackledirect.com/penn-reels-spinfisher-ssg.html to the Spinfisher's that are in the same price range. The BG is a good choice, that reel is a workhorse; I would even compare it to the 704/706 Penn's...I own a 704z and wouldn't trade it for nothing. If your into ebay or find one of those that's a route you could take too. You wouldn't be disappointed!

I have a couple Diawa BGs and a couple Shimano Baitrunners. Both are similar in that they offer simple, solid construction - their designs have passed the test of time.

I have had problems with the anti-reverse breaking on the Penn spinners. Have not had any problem with the Daiwa BG although I will admit it doesn't get a ton of use.

I have a BG20, BG30, and BG60. All 3 are extremely solid reels, they've been around for a while and have seen use in both salt and freshwater.

I think I am going to go with the BG60.

Great choice, can go from surf to pier and back again if needed.

I was looking at some reviews of the diawa bg and there were a couple that said the newer ones were not as good of quality as they used to be. Have any of you heard or experienced this?

I would feel good with'em. Time tested, durable reels; I think their just just as good as they ever were.

The BG series are much like the old Penn SS series and are workhorses. What application do you want to use the reel for surf boat or pier fishing? Remember there are many different types of fishing reels out on the market.

I would be using it in the surf.

If that's the case then I'd choose one in the bigger sizes to help with casting distance. If lite tackle is your choice stick with the smaller version. Yhe reel will work for you either way.
Good luck fishing.
